About this deal

Honeywell Evaporative Air Coolers or Swamp Coolers are a cost-friendly cooling option for your home. Much like a breeze flowing across a lake or the refreshing cool air you feel near a waterfall, air coolers produce a comfortable, cool breeze with the natural process of water evaporation. When warm air is drawn into the Honeywell Evaporative Cooler, it is filtered through a wet honeycomb cooling medium, which absorbs heat and naturally cools and humidifies the air. A powerful fan pushes the cool air out of the front of the unit into the surrounding area. This no-compressor system cools naturally, efficiently and inexpensively. Air coolers are much cheaper to run* than portable air conditioners, averaging 2-4p compared to 20-40p per hour. They’re also much lighter, averaging around 6-7kg rather than 20-30kg, and require no complicated set-up – although it’s wise to leave a door or window open to avoid too much humidity building up in the room, reducing their effectiveness. The question is, can they compete when a heatwave strikes? The Princess – a Dutch brand – was the first air cooler I tried, in the middle of 2022’s heatwave when all the big-beast proper air conditioners were sold out. It was a bit of a revelation, reducing the temperature in my bedroom from an entirely unreasonable 23 degrees (at midnight!) to a more bearable 19. Louvers All Honeywell Air Cooler models offer swing louvers. Some offer special louver functions, such as the CL70PE/ CO70PE’s auto-close shutters or the CL18PE’s 360 degree rotating louvers. Recommended for areas up to 491 Sq. ft. - Cooling area depends on room conditions, such as humidity.

When used indoors, expect the Honeywell CO48PM Evaporative Cooler to cool areas up to 610 square feet. Remember that you’ll need to position the unit near an open door or window, and the room should have good cross-ventilation to avoid high humidity levels. If you use this model outdoors, it has an air throw of up to 9.4 yards. Indoors or outdoors, swinging louvers help to widen the airflow path, while three fan speeds give you the choice of low, medium, or high operation. Despite being so well-equipped and user-friendly, there is no remote control for this portable evaporative cooler. Instead, all functions are controlled using the simple dials on the top of the unit.It is important to choose the right sized air cooler for the room you want to cool. The below guide can help you choose the right cooler for your space: There is often confusion about the difference between an evaporative air cooler versus a classic fan and a window or split air conditioner. Evaporative Air Coolers should not be used in enclosed spaces. Doors and windows should be opened to allow free airflow. An air cooler works best when placed near an open window, drawing in outside air and circulating it in the room before exiting via a window or door. The maximum cooling effect is felt when a person is near the flow of air coming out of the air cooler.

Ice Compartment Choose models with an added ice compartment to add ice for faster cooling when needed. Best used to help cool small to medium-sized rooms, the slim and lightweight design allows you to easily move the machine from room to room. Using oscillating air vents as part of its unique vertical tower design, the air is distributed more evenly throughout a room at a faster rate. It not only has a setting set for evaporative cooling but you can also opt for a gentle fan-only breeze and even use it as a humidifier in the colder months. All of these settings can be controlled with the included remote.

The best air coolers to buy in 2023

Having tried other air coolers I now realise it’s a bit of an outlier, with a more efficient motor enabling a greater airflow. It is considerably lighter than other air coolers, too, with a small footprint that makes it better for smaller spaces. Continuous Water Supply These models give you the option to connect to your home’s garden hose for hassle-free, continuous water tank refills. The Hessaire MC61V Portable Evaporative Cooler offers plenty of air movement, more evaporation surface, and a portable design. In combination, these features make this a great option as an evaporative cooler for most spaces, including porches, patios, garages, and some ventilated indoor living areas.

Part of this model’s success is due to the fact that it includes three media panels. While some swamp coolers may only include one or two media panels, the Hessaire MC61V houses a trio of high-density XeL50 media, which increase the evaporation surface compared to conventional media. More panels and evaporation surface means that there is more wet surface area to cool the air passing through the evaporative cooler. It also lowers static pressure inside the unit, improving efficiency. The 14.6-gallon water tank is large enough to keep the unit running for up to 4 hours, but it also includes a continuous fill feature if you’re using this evaporative cooler outside with access to a garden hose. On the subject of the fan, it should be noted that Bonaire uses an axial fan rather than the more typical belt-driven squirrel cage blower, also known as a centrifugal fan. Depending on the type of ductwork you have, the Bonaire Durango Roof Top Evaporative Cooler will produce a different or louder noise than an evaporative cooler with a centrifugal fan. There are mixed opinions on which one is better, but it’s worth noting that many people do find Bonaire’s axial fan to be less noticeable, and it’s rated to operate at 64 decibels. Most importantly, the majority of users in high-heat, low-humidity conditions find that this model is more than capable of maintaining cool temperatures on hot summer days. A portable air conditioner pulls in hot air, cools it using a motor and then reintroduces that cooled air into the room. Because portable air conditioners use a motor, they have an exhaust that must be ventilated through a hose and out the window — which makes them less versatile and less portable but great for small homes with few people.

AirConDirect’s Victor Stoica, another longstanding aircon expert, adds that they’re more environmentally friendly than refrigerant units, since they don’t use harmful chemicals. “Also, unlike air conditioners, they’re suitable for outdoor spaces like garages, workshops and patios,” he says. “They create spot cooling, dropping the air temperature by a few degrees.”
