About this deal

Reference to the reckless melting of the whole week’s cheese ration has been changed to simply ‘Mummy melted down some cheese’.

My whole world as a pony mad child revolved around ponies, stables, riding and getting mucky, and of course I read everything there was to read on the subject, this brought back fond memories of the Jill series of pony books so I decided as an equally pony/horse mad adult to see if they still had the same charm I remembered as a child. Missing last two paragraphs (nine lines) describing Jill’s enthusiasm for gymkhanas, telling her Mother about Martin and disappointment he had not come to Pool Cottage. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. The books follow the exploits of pony mad but broke Jill Crewe, her long suffering mother and her friends from age 11 right throughout their teenage years, from the sudden bit of good fortune that enabled her to purchase her first pony, through the trials, tribulations and sheer humiliation of learning to ride to running their own riding school and other exploits. It wasn't nearly as problematic as I'd expected (though there were a couple of iffy moments in terms of discriminatory language) and it made me laugh more than I thought it would.I throughly enjoyed reading this again and found that my memory hadn't played tricks on me - Jill still seems an independent resourceful girl and I still found parts of it funny, just as I had when a pony mad girl all those years ago.

once lifted me on to my pony himself, and there I sat in my little habit with my long fair curls hanging down to my waist. The Hampton and Armada versions have an extra phrase: ‘getting me down and making me pretty unbearable to live with. stars for personal nostalgia and for taking me to another place and time, not because I want to be there or think it was a better time, it's just not now. You can certainly forgive the impressionable child reading this book for thinking that ponies must actually be quite cheap and if her parents don't get her one it's probably just because they're evil.Missing five-line paragraph how when Ann arrives she has one of her little sisters with her, riding a new tricycle. Jill and her friends are having tea with Susan Pyke, a snooty, superior sort of girl with wealthy parents.

A touch of a toothache, that's all, but you know what these thoroughbreds are like, the least touch of pain and they act as if they were dying. I still love it, and am happy to see something that made 8-year-old Yvonne forget her troubles and get lost in a book.

Här får man veta hur hon fick sin första ponny, Black Boy, och hur hon lär sig rida, för att till sist nå större framgångar . Personally I thought (a) it was impossible to picture Mrs Pyke as a child at all, and (b) that curls down to your waist must have looked pretty awful all waving in the breeze like floating cork-screws.

Nine lines of dialogue missing from conversation as Jill and her Mother thank Martin for coming to teach her. And yet I know I knew that a bit at the time, and that I saw myself as pretty awful too, so we were good company for each other. I find myself not wanting to watch or read anything American and/or overly relevant right now, is all I can say.

Oh, the book isn't disgustingly racist, definitely not by the standards of the time - it's that casual kind of racism you come across in books written pre-civil rights where they casually refer to working hard as "working like a Black".
