Dot, a sweet Dalmatian, and her owner Rose, are doing wonderful volunteer work at their local hospital. Dot loves to go there and offer herself for pats, hugs and companionship to those afraid and hurting in so many different ways.But above all The hospital dog is funny and lively, entertaining and absorbing as Dot careers around the hospital, making everyone smile.

We love those lovely scenes where Dot the Hospital Dog cheered up the kid one by one. Just a pat, a stroke, a cuddle. Each of the children felt much better, calmer, and happier. All in all, a beautiful and fun book about dogs, hospitals, and making people happy. Highly recommended.We loved the previous collaboration between this pair on 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝗴 and this book is equally as good. This story was written some time ago inspired by Julia Donaldson’s visit to The Evelina Hospital in London but was recently published and has taken on a new significance with events of this year. The illustrations were just pure perfection, but then again it is all drawn by the super Sara Ogilvie whose art I just adore! It is also one of the reasons I took the book (the other being that it is written by Julie Donaldson). Pets As Therapy, a national charity founded in 1983, relies on its many volunteers who, along with their well-behaved dogs, make regular visits to nursing homes, hospitals, hospices and day care centres. The volunteers spend time with patients, residents or visitors, allowing them to stroke the PAT Dog and enjoy some companionship. Inspired by the author’s visit to a children’s hospital during which she saw first-hand the powerful positive impact visits from dogs can have on young patients, Julia Donaldson’s The Hospital Dog will put a wag in the tails of readers young and old, and ease pre-hospital anxiety. It’s a soul-warming hug of a book, with classic Donaldson rhymes, and Sara Ogilvie’s child-centred illustrations adding yet more characterful energy.
