About this deal

It’s implied that Dilly’s mother wasn’t particularly nice to her either; Dilly moved out at sixteen because her mother got a boyfriend Dilly disliked and she's made little effort to maintain a relationship with Dilly over the years. Rage Against the Reflection: Upon coming home from Rhona's birthday party, Beauty is described as looking "uglier than ever" by Gerry; this angers and saddens her to such an extent that she flings her hairbrush at her Venetian glass mirror. It shatters and Beauty immediately regrets it, knowing that Gerry will be furious. Fortunately, Gerry never finds out, as Dilly sells a diamond collar to buy a replacement and sneaks the broken one out before he notices. :D).

Mike: A kind painter who owns a B&B House on Rabbit Cove and takes Beauty and Dilly under his wing. Cookie - a lass with sass who'll inspire girls and boys alike (and make mums and dads laugh too) ... daft and funny for all.' - Zoe Ball

About Author

Berserk Button: For Beauty, insulting her mother. She is usually quite a sensible and level-headed girl, but when Skye won't stop insulting Dilly, Beauty threatens to shove her head-first into her profiterole cake.

Two best friends are pushed to the breaking point when a class election gets out of hand! Rivalry and ridiculousness abound in this delicious, zanily-illustrated adventure for readers who love Wimpy Kid and Dog Man. Mama Bear: Over the course of the story, Dilly develops the courage to stand up to Gerry and defend Beauty from his verbal and emotional abuse. As she puts it: "I've never been able to stand up for myself very well but I can stand up for my little girl." Ever since I left Blue Peter I was asked if I would write a book but I didn't want to just for the sake of it as there are so many great ones already out there. I felt the Cookie books could bring something new to the mix. She is a bit of an outsider, into knowledge and science and chaos follows her around! And then there's the "Brownies & Blondies" - where you an make the classic fudgy brownies and also branch out to turtle, marshmallow peanut butter and expresso carmel. Lonely Rich Kid: Beauty (at first). She is very well-off, but struggles to make friends because she doesn't fit in well with her classmates and is bullied by some of them. She eventually manages to befriend Rhona and by the end she's no longer wealthy but has made more friends. Beauty was an interesting, three-dimensional character; a smart, quiet girl who enjoys art and a children's show called 'The Rabbit Hutch'. I liked that the show proved to be so important to the plot, as I thought at first it was just an odd little quirk of Beauty's.

Calling the Old Man Out: After learning her father let her pet rabbit out, resulting in its Cruel and Unusual Death, Beauty pushes him away when he tries to hug her and tearfully yells " I bloody hate you!" Gerry subsequently threatens to wash her mouth out with soap. Cookie’s real name is Beauty. Her Dad is successful, but he’s quite a jerk. It is painful to witness, but not dark. Her mother, Dilly, is a young trophy wife, Dad’s third marriage. People often think Dilly and Beauty are sisters. All that, the first half of the book, culminates in a striking, 5-star chapter that takes place on Beauty’s birthday. The second half of the book changes tone - you’ll be happy for Beauty and her mother. In fact, Dilly grows as a person during the course of the story, which was an interesting bonus. Their mother/daughter relationship is fascinating, actually, because Beauty is brainier than her mother. I'm very thankful to NetGalley and the publisher for granting me an ARC of this book. The review below is entirely my own opinion: Following the advice in the book Intuitive Editing, I let my draft rest, then read it on my Kindle, and made notes on what I thought needed changing.

So…I saw ‘Scarlett’ by Cathy Cassidy standing on my bookshelf. I started it, and completely forgot about Harry Potter – I felt like I was involved with the character. You have an an incredible talent!! 🤩 Mum Looks Like a Sister: Dilly, who became a wife and a mother at a young age, is sometimes mistaken for Beauty's older sister due to her looks. This is one of my favourite Jacqueline Wilson books, and I think Beauty is one of my favourite of her characters too - I find her very relatable, especially her vivid imagination, her awkwardness, and her love of Sara Crewe from 'A Little Princess'. Well Done, Son" Guy: Beauty spends much of the first half of the novel trying to please Gerry (though some of it's motivated from fear). She eventually stops caring what her dad thinks.
