The first drives are expected in 2020, in either flavor. The portable bus-powered external hard drive market is served by all three HDD vendors - Seagate, Western Digital, and Toshiba. SMR allows vendors to offer higher capacity without the need to fundamentally change the underlying recording technology. With any laptop drive, power consumption is an important factor for users. The key sources of power draw get narrowed down to either the bright screen or the storage device used.
