The Club seems to be receiving fairly positive hype, so you might just take my review and opinions with a grain of salt and give this one a shot. Everything being said, I'm still cautiously a fan of Ellery Lloyd, and may give their third novel a read before I make a final decision on them. Now, this book club is a vibrant online community with a beautiful aesthetic and over 130k members. The club has hosted guest recommendations from a stellar cast of artists, musicians, writers and directors; including Grayson Perry, who went for Praise of Shadows, Greta Gerwig, who gave The Argonauts her seal of approval, and Sally Rooney, who chose Daniel Deronda. But behind the scenes, tensions are at breaking point: the ambitious and expensive project has pushed the Home Group's CEO and his long-suffering team to their absolute limits. All of them have something to hide—and that's before the beautiful people with their own ugly secrets even set foot on the island.

Celebrity book clubs

Four women have participated in their monthly book club for 40 years, bonding over the suggested literature, and have become very good friends. One day, as they read Fifty Shades of Grey, they are intrigued by its content. Considering this a wake-up call, they decide to expand their lives and pursue pleasures that have eluded them. Despite this age of isolation, the New York Public Library has been strengthening its community of readers since April 2020, when it teamed up with US radio station WNYC to launch its online book club. Sometimes, the price point of popular new-releases (often the fodder of book clubs) can put off readers who would otherwise love to join. But all the chosen books for this virtual book club can be read for free through NYPL’s e-reader app, which makes it easy to read any eBook in your library’s collection. This was quite an entertaining read for me. The characters were very interesting, their different motives were fascinating. The atmosphere and the setting both were superb. The Club, however, was not funny like People Like Her. It was really dark, and it could have used some humor to lighten it up.

The narrator, Tamaryn Payne, did an okay job at keeping the story moving and attempting to give each POV character a distinct voice. Her American accents were a bit stilted, but overall not awful. The biggest problem--there are WAY TOO MANY POV CHARACTERS. It's not Payne's fault there are so many and that they are virtually indistinguishable from each other. I couldn't keep the PA separated from the head of housekeeping separated from this or that celebrity, nor could I keep which bad person did what bad thing to whichever other bad person. There was not really one redeemable character in the bunch and I couldn't tell who was really who by the end and I didn't care (see above).
