Challenge Class Notes Grab Bag Review Shelfie Sitting Room Chats Travel Notes Tutorials What Am I Talking About? Rather than feeling thrown off by the unexpected content, I went along with the book’s antics and absolutely loved the hijinks of the story that I found. With a broad brush, Gudsnuk hits many of the angst-y issues of middle school, including popularity, bullying, family relationships, body image, and fandom, creating appeal for a large swath of readers.

She brings to life Prince Neptune (from a Tokyo Mew Mew/Sailor Moon/magical girl mash-up of an anime) and her ideal best friend, Madison from New York.

A perfectly judged niche story that has general appeal due to a clean text and cute character; Specs for Rex is a visual treat that's really worth putting your glasses on for. When Dany inherits an old sketch book from her great aunt Elma, she decides to draw the head of her favorite anime character: the evil but misunderstood Prince Neptune. Even if you have tried many similar friendship books for kids, this story about little Melissa will surely be an excellent addition to a toolkit! I wish I had something negative to say about this book for the sake of a balanced review, but I don’t.

When Madison discovers herself “not real,” a creation of Dany’s, she becomes upset and breaks with Dany, going on a journey of self-discovery that happens mostly off-page that includes finding herself homeless, living in a Wolmort, and then being taken into state custody, and placed with a foster family. It also introduces kids to the concepts of kindness, diversity, and inclusion, which are essential for comprehension of the nature of friendship. It’s a friendly and colourful way to encourage children to enjoy sharing and have fun, as they watch budgerigars chatter cheerfully and fish kiss carefully.Fortunately, Sukie’s new classmates are friendly, saying hello and showing her the way when she gets lost. Bully Nick Maloney, whom Prince Neptune had the previous book turned into a literal pig and whom Dany had healed, has meanwhile been leaving love notes signed from “a secret admirer” in Dany’s locker. If you want to improve your social skills, self-confidence, and ability to connect with someone, you can take our 1-minute quiz. Nick tries to laugh it off as a prank, and Cloney readily believes the notes a cruel prank—though I suspect that his feelings are or were genuine until Cloney publicly rejects him. This book covers the entire process from breaking the ice, making small talk, connecting with people, dealing with rejection, etc.

Seventh grade isn’t off to a great start for Dany – she’s starting middle school, none of her friends are in her classes, and she has to listen to her family argue about what to do with Great-Aunt Elma’s belongings.Mary Jackson and Czarnecki's friendship allowed them achieve greatness, such as, sending astronauts to the moon. But as entertaining as this side plot is, Making Friends is not about anime; it’s about friendship, of course. These are contemporary school stories, yes, but also stories of magic run amuck, magic gone awry, and the unintended consequences of unlimited magical power. Unfortunately, her friends are in a different school cluster and she's forced to start this new school by herself without any friends. Here Kerry will learn how to start conversations, take turns and play fairly, and work through disagreements and apologise - as well as understand different kinds of friendship and how they can change and grow.
