About this deal

When I pointed this out to the G-Force he asked me why I had not treated his jacket and trousers to the same loving treatment! Neither were pleasant, especially when caught out miles from anywhere and while walking for many hours. The effectiveness of any re-proofing product is dependent on how clean your garment is in the first place. I was instructed to give the powder drawer a through clean out so as to remove any ordinary washing powder as this can interfere with the cleaning and waterproofing process. Fiona Russell, better known as Fiona Outdoors, is a well-respected journalist based in the Scottish Highlands.

Other brands to look out for include Fibertec from Germany and Decathlon’s Forclaz, while some clothing brands like Endura and Assos sell their own care products. No, don’t worry, this blog isn’t about anything personal – it’s about the state of my old walking jacket!Spot cleaning before washing and using the Spray-On re-proofing treatment has really enhanced the quality of the re-proofing on even the dirtiest and most worn bits of our tester's jackets. NikWash Tech Wash is a hydrophobic (water repellent) cleaner which cleans your garment without leaving such a residue. Direct are both really easy to use: measure out, send your clothes through the washing machine a couple of times et voila! Direct Wash-In in your washing machine for re-proofing to give really comprehensive cover in all the nooks and crannies. She has enjoyed a long career, first in many of Scotland’s newspaper offices and then, for the last 17 years, as a freelancer.

Once the garment has been washed, you’ll need to tumble dry it or (lightly) iron it to activate the waterproofing. Grangers and Nikwax also make specialist washes and re-proofing products for items like down-filled jackets and tents. Re-waterproofing your technical cycling kit should usually be a two-stage process and we explain how best to keep your kit in tip-top condition, and what the best waterproof treatments are. As with all waterproofing cleaners / treatments it’s recommended that you only have two garments maximum in the machine and you clean any soap residue out your machine before you start.I won’t know for a while whether the waterproofing lasts and I doubt the re-waterproofing technique makes the jacket and trousers as good as when bought new but if you’re looking to revitalise your waterproof garments then Nikwax is certainly a budget-friendly way to go.

According to the company Nikwax, it’s also a good idea to first wash your jacket in Nikwax Tech Wash. The Tech Wash is really easy to use, you just add it as a normal detergent in your washing machine (or hand wash if you’re that way inclined). I’ve not used the Spray-In quite as much as I thought I would, preferring just to get a whole jacket clean and waterproof and the convenience of the washing machine. When used it can revitalise the breathability and water repellency of any much-used and loved waterproof jacket or pant. It has performed equally well on a variety of fabrics (including Goretex and DWR treated ones) with different levels of ingrained dirt and water-repellent failure.Frequency of re-proofing is going to be dependent on how much you wear your jacket and how mucky it gets. Will it be good enough to perform on my wet and dirty waterproofs and make it one of our best waterproof treatments for cycling jackets. Right up next we have the best reproofing agents that we've tried and tested here at Cycling Weekly. The progression to this state had been slow but it was undoubtedly aided by the long use of a rucksack, which rubbed at the shoulders, back and waist of my jacket.

The TX Direct Wash In can be used in exactly the same way as the Tech Wash and can revive breathability to fabrics without wicking liners. It has been useful for the shoulders of my walking waterproof which gets a lot of wear from my rucksack without the same level of muck-exposure as my bike jackets. Paul started writing for Cycling Weekly in 2015, covering cycling tech, new bikes and product testing.

It's an issue with any waterproof cycling jacket, but particularly with the best commuter cycling jackets, where the high level of traffic can quickly throw up a lot of dirt onto you and your jacket.
