About this deal

The fact remains that Ausiello, a person who has made a career out of telling people’s stories, has devoted years of his personal life to another person as well: caring for Kit, then writing about that experience, and now on a press tour talking about it. In short, it's a memoir of a man whose partner (in his early 40s) is diagnosed with terminal cancer and dies in less than a year. It can be frustratingly uneven, but strong performances from a talented cast help Spoiler Alert stay on the right side of saccharine. I regret that I can only give it five out of five stars, probably even 10/10 would not suffice to convey how much I love this story and the manner in which Michael told it. But after learning that the love of his life might have cancer, Ausiello couldn’t bear the thought of showing up for appointments and not being able to say, “I’m his husband.

Written by popular TV news blogger Michael Ausiello, ‘Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies’ is the tragic story of the final year of his husband Kit Cowan’s life.Yes, death is uncomfortable but I'm not even talking about that - it's more just a lot of information about their relationship. From the very title to the synopsis provided, anyone expecting anything other than a heart wrenching, tear-jerking story of love and devotion under the most odious of circumstances is sure to be disappointed. If these were fictional characters, I'd probably be more forgiving since they'd simply exist to advance a narrative and I could say that the author was making certain choices to convey the story a certain way. In all my years of reading books, from a young child to the present, no book has ever prompted so many fits of crying as this memoir (and side note to the haters with the audacity to flippantly toss one and two star reviews…I’m so glad I will never have the opportunity to cross paths with your crass, harsh, and indifferent attitudes). But that’s the thing that both Ausiello’s book and this gorgeously faithful film adaptation makes so beautifully, emotionally clear: When you’ve had a love like Michael and Kit had, you don’t ever stop saying goodbye.

Memorable Dialogue: Kit heads into Michael’s bedroom and Michael turns to his ridiculous statue and says, “Oh, Papa. The kind of love, even with all the troubles and trials that they had [and Kit and Michael had all of those and then some] that is what all of us want in our lives. Bring tissues, you will need them for the final act that, while sad, isn't meant to be spirit breaking. While most of the book focuses on the present-day: learning about Kit's shocking diagnosis, how that affects couple, and ultimately leading up to his death. And finally I rounded up the tear saga by sending a message sealing a hug, thanks and love to Michael Ausiello (which he acknowledged and replied to). Where other movies might indulge glibness or Oscar-clip force, Spoiler Alert opts for subtlety and clarity. What does he want to say about dealing with body dysmorphia while surrounding himself in looks obsessed celebrity culture?

And I’m going to keep him entertained through it so he doesn’t feel self-conscious about the fact that I’m invading his personal space. He was a chubby kid, but now he’s a tall dweeb, a descriptor levied upon him by a woman who’s drunk and best friends with Kit. For all its romance, the exhaustiveness with which Spoiler Alert covers the reality of a cancer battle shouldn’t be discounted from its impact. Despite their shell-shocked emotional haze, they made it to City Hall in time to register for a marriage license, but were unaware they’d be given an appointment at a later date for the ceremony. I admire Michael Ausiello for sharing his deeply personal story, but this book is not one I would recommend.

Ausiello's writing is breezy, as befits his regular gig, so this is not a book crafted of finely wrought sentences. Drew Barrymore Breaks Down In Tears For The 2nd Time This Week On 'Drew Barrymore Show' — And It's Only Wednesday! When I saw that he had a book coming out this fall, I naturally assumed this might be a collection of his TV writing. It was there that he launched his signature Ask Ausiello column and established himself as a major player in the world of TV journalism.
