As the years went on, Everett started boarding with us more frequently and for longer periods of time. Every time he came in he would be progressively more anxious, he was losing weight rapidly, he always smelt like urine, and his previous guardians were constantly talking to the vets about a solution for him. They wanted to help him but knew they couldn’t provide a life for him that would suit him. Over the last year I’ve had a lot of people reach out to me as they say goodbye to their pets, looking for words of comfort or advice, or simply to say they are broken and don’t know how to heal. Sometimes I think what I share might help. A part of me knows words can’t fix that kind of heartache. I think most of us just want to know there’s someone else who understands. Pepper was cleaning Fuji, something Nora spent much of her time doing when she was around. No dog can ever replace Nora or the connection I shared with her, but surely they can help keep her memory and spirit alive. The hardest part of having a soul dog is that one day they leave us, the best part is that the love lasts forever. He was this way from the womb and you can’t change genetics. You can’t train away bad genetics from poor breeding practices. Gus was set up to fail from the very start of his life and I’m just grateful I could help him experience joy, love, and kindness while he was with me. If you’re still grieving the loss of a dog whom passed away years ago, they may have been your heart dog. My cat Edison ran away in 2013 and I still cry over him. I’m still grieving. He was without a doubt my heart cat.

My heart dog was Alex, a 100 lb Belgian Malinois that we found in the desert 14 1/2 years ago. He was about 6 months at the time, had apparently been dumped. Couldn’t find an owner; we adopted him & raised him with Roxy, a Dalmatian Pit mix, another rescue for 14 years. They were great companions. Sheldrake calls these “morphogenetic fields” — a term from evolutionary biology — that links members of a social group—real links, Sheldrake says, not just metaphorical ones. Standard poodles can be an exceptionally brilliant breed of dog and like all dogs are masters of scent and observation. Many of her anecdotes can be explained by canine biology. Listening to podcasts from certified dog trainers and veterinary behaviorists, joining support groups filled with people who had been through it, and reading blog posts and articles about it.
