About this deal

This gin is distilled in a copper pot still named "Marjorie." The botanical list includes juniper, angelica root, cassia bark, cinnamon, coriander seed, lemon peel, licorice, nutmeg, orange peel, and orris root. It is bottled at a standard 40 percent ABV (80 proof). Distilled in Cheshire, England, Bombay Sapphire's full list of vapor-infused botanicals include juniper, almond, grains of paradise, lemon peel, licorice, orris root, angelica, coriander, cassia bark, and cubeb berries. It's old meets new with this gin. While the brand is relatively young, having launched in 1987, the beautiful array is based on a recipe from 1761. Another big difference is the distillation process. Instead of being a simple distillation, like vodka, botanicals are introduced early on during the process to maximize their flavors and aromas. Terminology: The terms to know when talking about gin

I've been privileged to sample both spirits next to one another prior to blending and, while both would make a fabulous vodka in their own right, such a tasting reveals that the sum is greater than the parts. Apparently, I'm the only "outsider" to have experienced this comparative tasting. Joannes exported his family's genever for the first time. Sharing their success, the Nolets support local charities and became respected citizens of Schiedam. During this period the town itself underwent much change, becoming the centre of Holland's distilling industry. The Nolets become distinguished members of the Distiller's Guild.Aviation's choice of a rye base gives this gin a creamier mouthfeel than most gins. It is a gin that you can enjoy chilled on its own, which is great news for super dry martini fans.

The Kyoto Distillery is Japan’s first dedicated artisanal gin distillery. The region might typically be known for sake, but a rising level of interest in other spirits has kept tourists returning for the gin, too. It's time to go old school and get a taste of gin brands that have revived the oldest gin recipes in the world. We begin with the oldest of the two, genever. You will find the gin to be very aromatic and filled with rich flavors, making it a true delight for any gin lover.Aside from that, there really are no limits, and today's gins feature a wide range of herbs, spices, flowers and fresh fruit to create the complex, sultry spirits we know today. Another Joannes, representing the fourth generation, expanded the distillery next to the town's new Grain Exchange. Joannes went on to become the Mayor Schiedam at a time when it was the world 'capital of spirits' with some of its windmills, the tallest in the world, partly financed by the Nolets. The first thing that gin drinkers notice whether by scent or by taste is that the juniper is muted, almost missing. The Nolet family have been distillers in Schiedam, Netherlands since 1691 and with over 320 years of genever distilling experience they are well qualified to make a gin. Since assuming the role of chairman in 1979, Carolus Nolet'sr. has also proved his family's mastery of marketing with the astounding success of its Ketel One Vodka brand which he introduced in 1983. Fixative: The most important botanicals used to bind the flavors of the gin. Some of the most common ones include orris and angelica root.

Contemporary gin: Gins that have a prominent flavor other than juniper. Although juniper is always included in the spirit, contemporary gin refers to a bottle that tastes of other botanicals or flavorings. But if you’re looking for something with a wider array of botanicals, distilleries around the country, as well as some abroad, make their own new school gins. These all include juniper as a base flavor, of course, but often use spices and fruit that define the region in which they are produced. And consider price as well when deciding on a gin, because some of the best are the least expensive. Build in a Burgundy glass with ice. First add a grapefruit wheel, then ice, NOLET’S Silver and ginger beer. Garnish with a sprig of mint. Like many other brands, Bols has expanded their genever selection. Beyond the original, you can find barrel-aged bottles, which are rested in French Limousin oak casks for 18 months. We may be a nation of gin and tonic devotees, but that doesn’t mean that your imagination has to stop at ‘ice and a slice’. Take inspiration from a bottle’s botanicals, and choose a couple of those as a fresh garnish. Our favourites include slices of cucumber, a sprig of rosemary or a wedge of grapefruit, to name but a few.

Having great admiration for the Founding Fathers of the American Revolution, Joannes' brother Jacobus became an acquaintance of John Adams, who later became the second president of the United States. This marks the start of a transatlantic connection that went on to help shape the company. Bols 100% Malt Spirit takes the neutral grain spirits out of the equation. The brand calls it "genever in its purest form," created from a distillate of corn, rye, and wheat that is fermented for longer than usual and married with juniper berries. Its taste is that of sweet grass with fruits and juniper. However, having said that, one of the reasons gin remains so popular is that it needs little more than a splash of tonic to enjoy. Its beauty lies in its simplicity.

This was in the days before the internet so being a Dutch vodka I called the trade department of the Dutch embassy in London and said we were keen on importing Ketel One and could they put me in touch with its makers. It was weeks later when out of the blue, one morning Bob called me. Gin is now definitely a global spirit, with excellent examples being made everywhere from the U.S. to Mexico to Southeast Asia, and even the UK has seen an infusion of new gin distilleries. The best thing about this is that each spirit is an attempt to capture some essence of its geography, often using locally sourced botanicals to flavor what otherwise would essentially be, well, vodka. With so many bottles to choose from, we’ve broken down some of the best gins out there to try now by highlighting stellar examples of the new and old school. Here are some of the best gin brands available now, from traditional London dry to brand-new innovations.

Cocktails

Add all ingredients except Champagne into an ice-filled shaker. Shake well and strain into a Champagne flute. Top with Champagne. Garnish with a lemon twist. There are more than 350 distilleries in the UK alone and plenty more across the world, showing that England’s national spirit is a popular choice no matter which hemisphere you find yourself in. There is a beautiful gin inside this distinct green bottle with its red wax seal. Tanqueray's crisp, dry style is the benchmark for a London dry gin without any citrus in the botanicals. It is a standard to which all other gins are compared and contrasted and also sells for a reasonable price. Today, drinkers can enjoy the diversity of gin.Unlike vodka, each bottle of gin is truly unique. The majority feature some degree of the pine flavor that comes from juniper, which is gin's signature ingredient, yet no two bottles have the same combination of botanicals.
