About this deal

The addition of Dolby Vision HDR support is also a big bonus for compatible TVs, and the upgraded Wi-Fi “antenna technology” promises to ensure stutter-free streaming of 4K HDR content. The first version had a Broadcom BCM28145 Dual Vore 1.2 GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB Storage, 802.11n WiFi, and Bluetooth 3.0. While the new second generation has a Mediatek 8127D Quad-core ARM 1.3 GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB Storage, 802.11ac WiFi, and Bluetooth 4.1. The video output resolution is the same for both with High definition 720p or 1080p. The Fire TV 4K Max supports the same HDR and Atmos formats as the standard 4K model, and has double the storage (16GB) of its predecessor. It too ships with an Alexa Voice Remote that can also control your soundbar and AV receiver as well as your TV.

Like it’s predecessor, you’ll still find a microphone button at the top of the remote, which can be used to summon Alexa without having to say “Alexa” before every command you make. Streaming in 1080p with HDR compatibility is super-fast while dual-band, dual-antenna Wi-Fi supports 5GHz networks, providing more streaming reliability and stability. Also new is improved reception technology based on dual-band Wi-Fi with 2 antennas (MIMO) and 802.11ac support. This promises smooth streaming, even with data-intensive 4K and HDR content.Performance? It's very good for the money. The HDR is typically excellent and brings an enjoyable punch to lower-res material, while the audio makes for a very easy listen with high levels of clarity. The remote therefore can now be used to change the volume on your TV, AV receiver, or soundbar, which is far more convenient. However, this model does have one obvious edge over lower-tier models, and that’s the ability to stream compatible titles in Ultra HD should you have a 4K TV.

Aside from the 4K upgrade, there’s little to get excited about, but there doesn’t really need to be as the price is so reasonable. All told, this is one of the best-priced and most capable 4K media streamers available. Remember to evaluate your needs and budget before determining which Fire TV option is right for you. Overall, the selection of apps available is extremely good, and you should be able to find most streaming platforms you can think of – although UK viewers won’t be able to find Now TV, and US viewers won't be able to stream on Walmart's Vudu, which is currently a large source of Dolby Vision content. Still, there's such a huge variety of content, so you probably won’t miss the odd niche app unless you are a diehard fan.

Also new in the third-gen model is a 1.7GHz quad-core processor, which helps to keep the Fire TV interface running smoothly. Press the voice button and say the title you want to watch. This is supported by power, volume and mute buttons. The new model is even more powerful than the one it replaces, upping the processor to 2GHz, and supporting Wi-Fi 6E, which potentially means lower latency streaming and faster speeds (as long as you have a compatible router).
