About this deal

First off, the Chaos Space Marines look great, their overall aesthetic hasn’t changed much over the years and it hasn’t needed to. They’re an imposing force to deal with, much like their Space Marine kin, but with some extra cruelty mixed in for good measure. This is an excellent starter box for those that want to turn worship the Chaos gods. The mix of troops allows for players to try different tactics and play styles to see what they prefer. And, like many of the other Combat Patrol boxes, each unit will become mainstays in your army even as it grows. Are They Difficult To Paint? Once you have the Codex, you can pretty much build anything you’ll want to field, but to really get the most out of them or dive into the different Chaos Legions, you’ll need to grab a few other books. Death Guard, Thousand Sons, and World Eaters

Let’s pretend you’re going with Abaddon (which you could swap out for a Chaos Lord in Terminator Armour and maybe another 5 Terminators instead). That’s 500-ish points before wargear. You’ll roll a pool of eight dice each battle round, andactivate up to two different abilities by spending particular combinations of dice. You’re looking for things like a pair of matching dice, a double 4+, any triple, and so on. Of the 25 miniatures in the Orks Combat Patrol, 24 were brand new on the set’s release, including 20 new Ork Boyz, three Deffkoptas, and a Warboss in mega-armour. The Deff Dread isn’t a new sculpt, but is as shooty and stompy as ever. This is… just OK. As far as being a value vs. MSRP goes it’s fine, but long-term you’re probably not going to use the Helbrute and the Havocs are more of a situational add to the army. The Chaos Space Marines notably don’t come with the new sprue to upgrade the unit to have a psyker or a heavy chainaxe – those will be options for the kill team – and so I might generally recommend passing on this box in favor of buying the individual units you’ll need. Melee Combat. Chaos Space Marines are generally pretty good when it comes to melee combat. They have a ton of great units that excel at roughing up enemies in close combat, such as the Lord Discordant, Possessed, Chosen, and Terminators. It’s very easy to build a Chaos Space Marine army that can wreak absolute havoc once it reaches the enemy.

Next Steps

You’re not strictly limited to a blood-themed paint scheme. The World Eaters’ pre-heresy livery was white and blue. You can replace almost any part of any colour scheme with white or off-white and it’ll work, as it doesn’t contrast or conflict with any colours. Blue is best reserved as an accent colour – the Warhammer studio paint scheme for Khârn the Betrayer uses a brilliant blue for accents on his plasma-pistol energy coils, chain-axe engine, hair-tassel trophies, and popping bicep vein. It’s also looking distinctly chaotic on Warhammer+ this week, with Battle Report showing a clash between the Sons of Horus and the Imperial Fists to demonstrate the new rules for Warhammer: The Horus Heresy. There’s also a Citadel Colour Masterclass on smoke effects, while the lore from Psychic Awakening books 4 and 5 come to the Warhammer Vault. likewise, the World Eaters are in transition to getting their own army at some point in the next year, and currently rules for the faction’s unique units can be found in White Dwarf 477. If you’re playing Chaos Space Marines, chances are you’re probably going to need at least two books if you want to really play. We’ve talked about the rules a bit in our general Getting Started article on the rules, but I’ll go into a bit more depth here.

The Warhammer 40K Combat Patrol: Blood Angels is a boxed set of 15 miniatures of collective 500-point value. The Blood Angels are another Space Marines Chapter, and they are direct descendants of the primarchs, the genetically-engineered sons of the Emperor of Mankind. In the story of the game, the Blood Angels have suffered heavy defeats, leading the vanguard against xenos across the universe and facing countless foes. Shooting. Chaos Space Marine shooting is generally not very good; most CSM guns top out at 24″ or 36″ range and most of the army’s core units rely on AP 0 boltguns, which are not good. While Chaos Space Marines certainly have some better shooting options, such as Obliterators, Contemptors, and Havocs, it’s not the army’s strongest area. In the 10 th edition of Warhammer 40K that was published in 2023, the Combat Patrol boxed sets also became their own format, allowing for a more balanced and accessible 500-point game in a major rebalancing shift initiated by Games Workshop. Is a Combat Patrol box in Warhammer 40K worth it? The Warhammer Vault meanwhile adds the entirety of Flyers of the Dark Millennium to its ever-growing library. This Week on Warhammer-Community.com The third book in John French’s investigation of one of the most compelling followers of Chaos arrives as an MP3 audiobook. Chaos Space Marines eShortsThe next three armies are all built around Start Collecting! boxes, which are all a great way to start any new force. Many of them contain enough models for you to build a Combat Patrol force right away. Genestealer Cults Chaos Space Marines (8 w/bolter or bolt pistol + chainsword, 1 champion, 1 melta/flamer/plasma, 1 heavy bolter/missile launcher) Let’s jump into some particular goals you might have, and how I’d recommend building in the next section.
