About this deal

Large publishing houses don’t really print chapbooks — their focus is on longer poetic collections. So if you’re hoping to place your chapbook with a publisher, you’ll need to find smaller presses specializing in poetry. Several accept direct submissions, so you need to use Google to your advantage to find the best options for you. A few examples include Big Game Press, Noemi Press, Dancing Girl Press and Letter Machine Editions (not open to submissions at the time of writing) in the US, and Maytree Press in the UK. Most contests do charge an entry or ‘reading’ fee, so it’s up to you to verify that each is reputable, legitimate and not a scam contest. You also need to decide which contests’ prizes are worth the entry fees; this is a matter of a simple cost-benefit analysis. When I was putting together my first pamphlet, Gin & Tonic, one of the concerns I had was that the book wouldn’t be cohesive, that the poems I’d written really didn’t have anything to do with each other. I asked Peter Sansom (my editor at The Poetry Business) about this and he wasn’t concerned in the slightest: whether or not I’d intended it, the poems were supposed to be together. The things we obsess over tend to form clusters in our work, but it’s also a good idea to take these ideas and run with them. What are you interested in? What are your themes? How can you expand on these further? Generally, pamphlets are anywhere between 15-25 poems and a collection averages around 50 poems. It’s worth thinking about what ideas you want to incorporate within these parameters. Munken Bookwove Cream - This is the same paper as the Bookwove White but as the name suggests, this is the cream version. Again this paper is mostly used for novels and for making the spine of your book bigger. Self-publishing a poetry book doesn’t have to be overwhelming. We’ve compiled actionable steps you can take to print and self-publish your poetry book:

Compared to DIY chapbooks, print-on-demand ones are much sleeker and professionally finished, which inevitably lends your book a more serious look (not saying it should, but it does). Finally, its most obvious advantage over making your chapbooks at home is the simple truth that you also save tons of time you'd otherwise spend fiddling with a stapler and ruler. Traditional publishing: Chapbook contests Before we dive in, remember – there’s no hurry to publish your first book, and you might never want to! Many poets prefer to share their poetry in different ways, such as performing, online or in magazines. Now, over to Phoebe… How do I choose which poems to go into my pamphlet? Before you start formatting your poetry book and preparing your files for print, consider hiring a poetry editor . When self-publishing a poetry book, it’s important to hire a professional editor, proficient in editing poetry. In this poem, the author compares her situation to various objects. Our experiences in life can be compared to objects. For example, if someone is bright and cheery, we might compare her to a ray of sunshine. If someone is mean, we might compare those words to the hiss of a snake. When you decide to self-publish, the first thing you should do is find your poetry audience. Start by doing an online search:Recycled - A popular paper for non-fiction titles. This is our recycled paper which is a white similar to the 100gsm Opaque but has a slightly rougher feel but is smoother than the Bookwove papers. For a more eye-grabbing, special edition look, consider adding Diamond 3D printing to your book cover to make it pop! The more you write poems with support, the more comfortable you'll become to step out on your own and find your own voice. We hope these writing exercises help you take a step in that direction.

Moral rights protect the bond between you and your work. They include the right for you to be associated with your work and prevent others from altering your work significantly. Examples include: This advice goes for full-length collections, too. For my collection, Platinum Blonde, I set myself a target of 50 poems. I knew the book was completed when I had edited 50 of my poems (more or less) to my satisfaction. I also felt like I’d taken the themes of the book to their fullest potential: I’d moved into a different space psychologically and I felt I had said everything I wanted to say on those subjects. How do I choose a publisher? Pro tip: If you have a small following and want to grow it, a self-published chapbook could be perfect for you. However, if you're new to the poetry scene, consider waiting until you’ve published poetry in literary magazines, so your chapbook can attract more attention. Once you have your poems and you love each and every one of your weird children, the next thing to consider is structure: how should your poems be organised? The cover of your book is what people are going to see first, so make it eye-catching. Whether you have a fully illustrated cover or decide to go with just text, there are multiple ways you can make your books stand out, including 48 Hour Books’ exclusive Diamond 3D Printing.Start by researching popular book design trends to stay up-to-date on what is selling on the shelves. Go to the poetry section at the store and look at book covers to see which ones resonate with you. Once you have a good idea of what you like, relay this information to your book cover designer. You may also want to consider joining a writers’ union, like the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain (WGGB), the Society of Authors (SoA) or the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), depending on where your poetry is published. The advice of such organisations can come in handy when you need contract vetting or legal advice. Here’s a few reputable chapbook contests to start you off (note that some of these accept prose, too): We understand that chapbooks don't traditionally get made with a huge production budget, but if you've got the funds, we always advise that you work with a professional book interior designer to prepare your chapbook. I once heard the comedian Laura Davis say you should tell your second best joke at the start of your stand-up set and your best joke at the end. What does this have to do with poetry books? Maybe nothing. But I think what she means is that there should be a progression and that your most hard-hitting poems should be spaced away from each other. I try and mix up the poems I imagine yelling with the poems I imagine whispering. In comparison to offset printing, print-on-demand is more cost-effective for smaller print runs, it's faster, and also means you won't need to store cardboard boxes full of books in your living room or basement. Instead, the printer sends books directly to customers! As with structure, you also have the ability to take liberties with formatting for poetry books. Formatting may sometimes differ from poem to poem. The way you format your poems can affect the way the reader interprets the meaning of a poem, and just as importantly, how they read it. But there are lots and lots of publishers – if you’re in the UK, have a look through the listings in the National Poetry Library. If you can, it’s also good to go to fairs like the Poetry Book Fair, run by The Poetry Society: you can chat to publishers and get a feel for where your work might belong. You might like to keep an eye on the prizes like Michael Marks Awards for Poetry Pamphlets, which is the big award for pamphlets, for ideas too. Free Verse Poetry Book Fair 2018.
