About this deal

myForest supports users through regulation and good practice, making sustainable management and the creation of forests across Britain easier to achieve. Designated areas or features should be indicated on one of the annotated maps within your plan. If a designation applies, please provide details. Magic Map Some grant schemes ask land managers to have an approved management plan in place prior to making an application. The Tree Growth Project seeks to collect regular growth data to improve our understanding of the response of trees to changes in woodland management and climate change across the country. Volunteers take regular measurements using growth bands and upload the data via Forest Lab. Read our tree growth case study. In August 2022, Sylva Foundation launched the new enhanced version of myForest to provide the latest in technology and guidance to sustainably manage forests, and unique support for the creation of new forests across Britain. While myForest has a new look and rebranded, there has been no impact on your stored data and information.

myForest is not able to import multipolygons (at this stage) and as a result, users uploading shapefiles containing multipolygons may will encounter the issue where some items from within a shapefile will become visible when imported, however other aspects which would be expected do not become visible. To import mapping into myForest, you will need to provide shapefiles which contain single polygons only. For guidance on converting multi-polygons to single polygons, please refer to guidance produced by the software provider. Features are an important part of any forest creation or management plan, ensuring each feature is mapped accurately is vital to developing an effective maps and plans which are appropriate for any range of desired activities. myForest is the flagship project of Sylva Foundation, an environmental and forestry charity providing innovative solutions to some of the greatest environmental challenges to modern society.Dave Biggs, WoodMizer UK Woodland Management Focus Area Pilot - Reheat (renewable technologies) Ltd (re:heat) As part of this support and advice, the Focus Area Pilot is running a series of ten webinars to help woodland owners understand the benefits of managing woodland and how to progress management of their woodlands. Seven webinar titles were decided with the remaining three to be determined by attendees’ interests.

We are calling this project Forest Lab. Engagement Agreement Both projections EPSG:4326 and EPSG:3857 use the WGS84 reference system (this is a standard approximation model of the Earth's surface. EPSG:4326 coordinates are unprojected, giving you exact locations on the WGS84 spheroid (the latitude/longitude degrees which you may be familiar with). EPSG:3857 coordinates are projected onto a flat plane. This projection type is the standard used by web maps because the projection works fairly evenly across the globe. EPSG:27700 is the OS projection. It gives a nice consistent view of the UK but it is not advisable to use this projection outside the UK. Forest Lab is an application within myForest which provides technology and tools to help land managers share data to inform environmental science, and in return improve knowledge exchange between scientists and land managers. In the first year (2020) we are engaging with stakeholders within the Northern Forest, to co-design and then assess a range of innovative methods to provide greater knowledge and improved management of woodland creation for a wide range of stakeholders at different holding scales and across different landscapes. At the end of March we held an interactive online workshop with 27 stakeholders to start the co-design process. The Woodland Management Focus Area Pilot is developing a methodology to locate currently unmanaged woodlands which have the lowest barriers to management with the aim to engage woodland owners and ultimately bring more woodlands into management. The standard forestry convention dictates that compartments should be provided with a number (you may also include a compartment name), and sub-compartments should be provided with a letter (you may also include a sub-compartment name). Through this systematic approach, when producing maps or plans which are submitted to any stakeholder, the compartments, sub-compartments, and any plans associated with that area are clear and easy to understand. myForest is bringing the latest technology to people who manage and create our forests. myForest provides comprehensive online mapping, digital tools and the latest resources to sustainably manage, and create new forests around Britain. Climate Risk Indicators is a free online tool to visualise UK climate change data, including average, minimum and maximum temperatures, rainfall, and temperature extremes. It provides indicators of risk including for wildfire, agriculture, river levels, and transport. Information and a How to Guide are included within the Tool and through the Climate Resilience Programme.

There are several common issues users encounter when trying to import mapping into myForest, including: If you want to create a woodland plan, you should include all woodland on your property. How to produce your plan When creating either a forest creation or management plan it is vital to outline the Forest Management Unit (FMU). The FMU is the area subject to a forest management plan or proposal. This area is selected by the owner and/or manager and will be determined by the nature of the forest, the proposed operations and both creation and management objectives. Extensive FMUs have the advantage of allowing a strategic approach to be taken in achieving UK Forestry Standard (UKFS) Requirements, both in terms of the area covered and the timescale.Forest Lab started as a simple idea; ‘wouldn’t it be good if myForest users could help researchers?’ This soon prompted a follow-up question; ‘how can researchers help myForest users with issues impacting their forests?’ This two-way exchange is the foundation of what has become Forest Lab.”
