Although there are numerous blessing and benefits of reciting salawat, the most dear to any believing man or woman is stated in a hadith narrated by Abdullah bin Masud رضي الله عنه that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: The closest of people to me on the Day of Resurrection will be those who send the most blessings on me. Al-Jazuli then moved east to Medina where he would recite the whole of the Dala'il al-Khayrat twice daily at Muhammad's grave in al-Masjid an-Nabawi. The Dala'il Khayrat has since been seen as a testament of love and passionate longing for Muhammad. The legend behind the origin of the Dala’il al-Khayrat is that al-Jazuli once awoke late for his morning prayers and began to look in vain for pure water to perform ritual ablutions. In the midst of his search al-Jazuli encountered a young girl who was aware of al-Jazuli's famed religiosity and was bewildered on why al-Jazuli could not find pure water. The girl then spat into a well which miraculously overflowed with pure sweet water for al-Jazuli to perform ablutions. Consequent to performing prayer, al-Jazuli inquired to the means by which the girl achieved such a high spiritual station. The girl replied it was simply by "Making constant prayer for God to bless the best of creation by the number of breaths and heartbeats." Al-Jazuli then resolved to write a work collecting litanies of prayers asking God to bless and show mercy and kindness to Muhammad.

Fearing the imam’s growing influence and following his criticism of the local authorities for taking money from the Portuguese, the governor of Asafi asked him to leave the city. The extended title of the book is Dalail Al Khairat wa Shawariq Al-Anwar fi Dhikr al-Salat 'ala al-Nabi al-Mukhtar (One who guides to goodness and the emergence of blazing lights, because he incites to pray on the chosen Prophet). The Imam taught them that the sanctity of the Shaykh with his disciples was like the sanctity of the Prophet ﷺ with his companions. He also believed in adhering to spiritual masters, and taught that through them one receives illumination, mercy and secrets. He had many illustrious students who transmitted many narrations from him and his teachings on Sufism. Imam al-Jazuli would often tell his students to write down his words, as they were divinely inspired. Imam Jazuli lived in 9th Hijri-century Morocco, a time of weakness in the Muslim umma , with weakening scholarship and corruption that lead to a normalization of major sins. He compiled this text for an umma that was increasingly in need of re-establishing its connection with the very foundation of the religion; the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him. By understanding his centrality to our religion, it becomes even more important that we follow the command of our Lord Most High: He was killed on the 16th of Rabiul Awal in 870 Hijriah in the City of Sus as a result of being poisoned. His death was just at the time he was carrying out the dawn prayer prostration. After 77 years from his death, the body of Sheikh Muhammad bin Sulaiman al-Jazuli was moved to the City of Marrakesh. According to testimony, his body was intact as it was when he was buried, not changed at all (Syekh Abdul Majid as-Syarnubi, Syarah Dalail al-Khairat, Cet. Maktabah Al-Adab, pp. 2-3). He revealed that he was the ‘Renewer of his era’ (Mujaddid) and he opposed the methods of the scholars, who themselves were corrupt and averse to spiritual refinement, causing the people to go astray.
