About this deal

I like to position the guide rail around the same height as the screw, so I can thow in long lengths of wood and balance them level across both these parts. For even longer lengths I can rest them and pivot on the guide while I grab a holdfast for the other end.

you can never have too many classic 52 1/2 vices 1960s Version VII – the final Record 52 1/2 (1963) However, that said, if you mostly make smaller projects such as boxes (like I do) and can get a 52 for cheap or even free (as I did), I think it is undoubtedly a handy and capable vise. Sad though to hear yet again of the demise of good Sheffield craftsmanship, which I am acutely aware through living here – just today I heard of a small firm setting up some sort of machine controlled grinder because there was no one left who could hand grind. A woodcraft vice is designed to be used at home. Woodwork vices (for the most part) are heavy-duty, but the woodcraft vice is light-duty. This is because it is lighter in construction than other woodworking vices, and is designed for domestic use instead of industrial or workshop use. The new version improved on the previous model by the use of steel rods rather than the cast steel slides used in the copy of the Parkinson vice. The cast iron sliders were comparatively fragile and the polished steel rods afforded a smoother mechanism. This was a better design and all the major GB manufacturers had switched to it (including Parkinson) by the 1930s.Credit subject to status and affordability. Terms and conditions apply. Financial Services Register no. 704348. now we’re looking at the other end of the bench and going through my favourite options when it comes to choosing a face vice. I was so under this impression it never occurred to me that Record everade other tools other than vice’s.

I do have two metalworking vises, so I expected the #57 to be used only for the occasional woodworking I do. However, it turns out that it has now become the vise I use the most, due to its location on the bench and height. Incidentally, the wooden-liner mounting holes in the rear jaw weren’t threaded, so I cut M6 thread in it myself. Not sure if the factory forgot to cut threads or whether doing so was normally left as ‘an exercise for the new owner’.You don’t need to worry about bolting right through as you’re not going to be hammering in to this thing. The new design (below) has a separate metal housing that is attached to the rear carriage with two bolts and this means the the half nut can be removed for cleaning even after the vice has been fixed to the bench. updated mechanism: removable housing for the half nut the removable steel ‘sawdust excluder plate’ in the rear carriage that covered the half-nut is gone and instead the casting is solid in this area It’s possible, but the tooling is drastically expensive once you get to threads of this diameter. And making the tooling is a sod. Any wellying in the vice will soon bugger it up, you’ll go through them like there’s no tomorrow. Other Face Vice Options.

Great vice – would have been nice to have had one with the drop down dog on the jaw, but i’ll live.Traditionally face vices came in a few types, but you’d generally have a nice big screw, a hefty jaw and some means of keeping it all in line.

These cast vices are popular through many industries so whilst there’s a lot to choose from, they’re not all equal. The woodcraft vice is commonly used to clamp small and light pieces of wood for woodworking. It is an ideal tool for the hobbyist or handyman, however, it can also be used by professional woodworkers for small tasks. It is ideal when creating a variety of household items as it can be used for clamping wood that is to be filed, glued, painted or crafted. A woodcraft vice can come in use when crafting many wooden objects, for example:

It’s better than anything else I’ve used because it’s so worn in. It feels like the vice has limbered up and is always ready to go. Like a lovely worn in engine.
