About this deal

The specials centre on a brand new character called the Zonk, who sends the characters off to the magical world of the ZonkeyZoney so they can relax in peace. The series is fully animated in 3D CGI animation, unlike the original series which was a mix of CGI, 2D animation and live-action. Before setting off to meet Davenport, I'd asked my daughter if she had a question for Iggle Piggle's daddy. "Why does Iggle Piggle have to go to bed?" she said. "That's a really interesting question," says Davenport. "He's the connection for the child, the one who goes to sleep at the beginning and enters the Night Garden. But he's also, crucially, the only character not in bed at the end. 'Somebody's not in bed – Iggle Piggle's not in bed.' BBC - Press Office - CBeebies Autumn 2008 schedule". BBC. In the Night Garden... is intended to help children relax and achieve calming relationships with their parents. Producer Anne Wood also states: "We became very aware of the anxiety surrounding the care of young children which manifested itself in all kinds of directions, but the one big subject that came up, again and again, was bedtime. It's the classical time for tension between children who want to stay up and parents who want them to go to bed. So this is a programme about calming things down whereas most children's TV is about getting everything up." [6] BBC – CBeebies Grownups – In the Night Garden". BBC. Several Region 2 DVDs have been released in the United Kingdom by BBC Worldwide since September 2007: Lane, Harriet (25 November 2007). "Night fever: How In The Night Garden became a TV fairytale". The Observer. ISSN 0029-7712 . Retrieved 30 August 2023. Bedtime really commands a child's entire day. Very often children don't have a proper sense of time. They live with the idea that, at any moment, someone could just take them from what they are doing and send them to bed. It can be a difficult moment: being suddenly alone. So In the Night Garden makes a metaphorical explanation for sleep, which is one of the only things in a child's life it can't be accompanied on. That's why you have the image of Iggle Piggle alone on a boat at the start, floating on a dark swelling ocean that's a metaphor for sleep."

The solution takes the form of a travelling inflatable theatre fitted with baby-friendly touches, such as microwaves for the warming of milk (promising a whole new kind of interval drinks bedlam). Audiences are offered a choice of two stories. "One features Iggle Piggle losing his blanket," says Davenport. "The other features Makka Pakka washing everyone's faces." Neither story, it's safe to say, will come as a great surprise to regular viewers of the show, many of whom are parents who find its soothing antics easier on the eye and the ear, not to mention the imagination, than Teletubbies. On 1 October 2019, the "In the Night Garden Igglepiggle Peek-a-boo Clip-on Toy" made by Golden Bear Toys was recalled due to a possible choking hazard to young children. Andrew Davenport stated in an interview with the Guardian that the key inspiration for the series was his own dream world as a child. This started coming into place in 2004 when Davenport created sketches for the characters of Igglepiggle, Upsy Daisy and Makka Pakka. The series would go on to be publicly announced a year later, and filming would eventually start in early 2005. [5] One parent petitioner was quoted by The Daily Telegraph commenting: "My four-year-old refused to believe it was bedtime because In the Night Garden... hadn't been on and it was daylight outside.", this is because the show was removed from CBeebies' Bedtime Hour for a while in 2008.
