About this deal

Now that your boots are done up properly stand up on your tiptoes and walk on the spot on the balls of your feet as if you are walking up a steep hill. If your heels lift more than approximately 5mm from the footbed you may need to pull the laces tighter, or the boots may just be the wrong shape for you.

If you can see this amount of space then you are pretty much on the way to making sure that your boots are the correct size. This space between your toes and the end of the footbed ensures that you will not stub your toes on the inside of the boot when you descend. This can be excruciatingly painful. If you can’t see this amount of space then it’s a good bet that the boots will be too small. We put the men’s Salomon OUTward Mid GTX through its paces for this review, and Salomon makes the shoe in a women’s-specific version for the same price. The women’s OUTward Mid GTX features an identical build but weighs slightly less at 1 pound 11.5 ounces and is offered in different colorways. As we mentioned above, neither model is sold in a non-waterproof version yet, but we hope Salomon adds a more breathable, non-GTX design to the collection in the future.

An important thing to mention here is that I took the shoes straight from the box to the trail. It’s quite obvious that Salomon Outline GTX requires a gentler break-in period. But let’s not dwell on what you don’t have, instead we shall teach you how to ascertain your size using some common household objects. The Outline GTX is constructed with an Ortholite insole and an EVA midsole. The insole is known for its long-term cushioning, high-level breathability, and moisture-management qualities. It's also washable and lightweight. Lacing is as important as any other performance factor. If your laces are hard to tie or keep getting loose, they can be a real pain.

Synthetic upper

The expression light as a feather comes to mind when someone mentions the Salomon Outline GTX. Weighing 350 g for the men’s version and 290 g for the women’s, they help you increase speed and don't make your legs feel like they're lugging something around – as can sometimes be the case with heavy walking boots. These Salomon trainers are equipped with a High Traction Contagrip outsole. In case you're not familiar with the design, it leverages three factors to ensure the best grip possible: Density, Compound, and Geometry. Salomon went classic with regular flat laces on the Outline GTX. This type of laces reduces discomfort for the instep, guaranteeing a comfortable fit. They're also durable and easy to tie. Out of all the Salomon hiking shoes I’ve ever tested, these were the ones with the most running shoe-like feel.

Even the “Mid” GTX version has a lower-cut and significantly more flexible ankle than a lot of other “Mids” I tested in the last couple of years. Neither the Low nor the Mid variant of this popular shoe is designed for technical terrain or multi-day hiking. In our Hereford shop we offer a professional boot fitting service where we assess your feet, find a selection of boots that match you foot shape and most importantly we make sure that they are comfortable. This iseasy to do in the shop, where we have access tothe right tools, the option of letting you try on as many styles as you like and a knowledgeable member of staff that cancommunicate directly with you regarding your needs. Salomon shoes often run narrow, but the OUTward is a bit more generous and a great match for those with average feet. Salomon Outline GTX hiking shoes are available in two variants – the waterproof version and the non-waterproof (non-GTX) version.
