About this deal

Five Get into Trouble is the eighth novel in The Famous Five series by Enid Blyton. It was first published in 1949. They meet Richard at a lake belonging to his father. The lake is called "Green Pool". In the previous book the children were also at a different lake with the same name. A weird coincidence that a watchful editor probably would have changed. Lima Sekawan benar-benar membangkitkan keinginan masa kecil deh. There are lots of situations that aren't credible to begin with: young children from 10 years old who go on camping trips all alone, they can buy cigarettes, …

By now (book 8 in the series) the beginnings of the books are settling into a formula. These books are formulaic by design, but we are all right with it. We want more of a good thing, and we know we are in the hands of a master storyteller. So, standard Famous Five book beginning: Uncle Quentin, forgetting the children were coming, made another commitment and has to leave with Aunt Fanny. Joanna the cook is ill (of course). What a problem! Fortunately the children suggest a solution: they want to go on a cycling holiday. I'm very happy with the idea the children come up with this time. That's bound to be fun! I love it when they go on their own! The story ends with Richard's parents inviting the children to their home. Richard's father says his son acted very foolishly, and Julian agrees but then says that he redeemed himself by his bravery and determination during the escape. Everything ends well! Good-bye, Aunt Fanny! I’m afraid we shan’t be able to write to you, as you won’t be able to get in touch with us to let us know where you get fixed up. Never mind, enjoy yourselves,’ said Julian. When one of the gang members leaves in their car, Richard hides in the boot, narrowly escapes being recaptured and then goes to the police. When the police arrive at Owl's Dene, Julian shows them the secret room containing an escaped convict and stolen diamonds. The Five later join Richard for a meal and praise his heroism. Run, Anne. Run. [ Dove: Do. I bet Martin would help you escape. I think he appreciates when you helped him escape.]

They try eating the eggs and bread and ham they bought from the rude farmer, but that proves impossible while riding so they stop and sit by the side of the road. There’s a fallen-down cottage nearby, and while they’re eating a ‘big stream-lined car’ comes along, driving with its headlights off. If they find that a difficult amount of things to choose from, I’d love to take them to Costco. [ Dove: Take ’em to Bar Burrito or Subway. Watch their brains implode at the constant barrage of questions.] As a kid I absolutely adored the adventures of The Famous Five by Enid Blyton and I've reread the entire collection of 21 books several times. And that’s Book Eight. I must give credit to Blyton for offering up a storyline that is significantly different than the ones so far. We haven’t had a kidnapping or the Five trapped by criminals before. If Blyton pulls her punches and does not cause the Five to suffer too much that is understandable given the age of her target audience. Now, clearly the Five are too young to survive in George's house without a cook, so the obvious solution is to send them on a cycling tour with Timmy running free alongside, where not only will they have to dodge cars etc, and find fields to camp in, and swim in random unknown lakes, and deal with tramps ... but still have to cook for themselves!

Richard begs to come along so he can stay with his aunt who conveniently lives there, and they agree on the condition that his mother says he can. The Five are going to bike to Croker’s Corner and wait, and if he’s not there in ten minutes they’ll go on without him.
