Another was the big change that one of the male characters makes towards the end of the book, with a few of our readers feeling this happened very quickly.Halajan is the only character of interest with her no bullshit attitude, long hidden forbidden love story and passion for Rumi, but she alone is not enough to save this book from saccharine tedium. Moving on to the actual story: the characters have evidently been well thought out, but some seem to be watered down versions of the people they could have been. It deas with some pretty gritty topics as well, which adds something to the book and moves it away from the chick-lit genre it would otherwise be placed in. I would compare this book favorably with Hosseini's "A Thousand Splendid Suns" and Mortenson's "Three Cups of Tea.

It is a very easy read and the author, Deborah Rodriguez, has lived and run a cafe in Kabul herself so you can have some confidence that she probably knows what she is writing about. But the repercussions of a traumatic childhood far from home have left her struggling for her way in life. The scenarios are gripping but I wasn't much engaged by the Western characters portrayed, though details of daily life were fascinating. Love and friendship are other themes we identified in the book, with the café being a centre of support and connection for all five main female characters. The café and the way the women made time for themselves each week, made me think of this group and how grateful I am for it. She spends most of her time trying to raise funds for Wakil’s schools and his other philanthropic endeavours.
