About this deal

Because, obviously, we came in when punk music came back in with its second wave – should we say – of 1980, with The Exploited and GBH and all this, the aggressive, grungy side of punk. Nick: It’s funny because we’re doing Punk Rock Bowling this year, and they put us in this smaller venue, than we’ve done it before in Vegas, and as soon as they put it out it sold out. Expect a set full of hard-hitting, heart-on-the-sleeve anthems like Looking For Glory, No Regrets and One More Drink from the four-piece, who include Cock Sparrer’s Daryl Smith on guitar. Frontman and lead singer Nick Culmer, better known by his stage name Animal, of English punk group Anti-Nowhere League performs live on stage at The 1865 venue in Southampton. When I came back [from Canada] and started with the band, it did stop me from going back on the dark side, as they say, and getting into too much trouble.

What started out as Durham Punk Festival in 2005 moved to Newcastle in 2013, and after a year at the O2 Academy, it has now found a home from home at Northumbria University. You rode with bike gangs, skipped the country and lived off the grid in the Canadian mountains, spent a couple years in jail. Our sets are slightly restricted, as there are certain songs we simply can’t play due to Nick’s restricted vocal range, and thus will likely be a little shorter than we normally do. It’s in the pipeline: we want to get along there, but you know, it’s all down to [booking] agents, isn’t it? They’ve just taken it and polished it into a typical American – ‘awesome, awesome, man,’ [adopts cheesy American accent] thing. refused to sanction the release of these two songs because of fear of litigation, so Nick (Animal) eventually relented and let the album be released with the two disputed songs omitted. Nick: Because we got signed to Cleopatra Records in California, they want to put the book out [in the US], but my manager is still waiting until the legal teams are finished pawing over it, I think, and then we’re going to approach people. Whereas, maybe in the Led Zeppelin days, and the Yes days, you wouldn’t have got to put a record out as easily. Unfortunately, the band, like a bad smell, just followed me a bit – I still got into a bit of trouble in the band. Nick: I’ve just finished my book – it’s being dredged through by the legal team at the moment – they’re obviously scared in this day and age to put anything out which is going to be… you know… upsetting people.

November 1981 saw the release of their first single, a cover version of Ralph McTell's " Streets of London". I don’t think it achieves anything, it’s just a voice for kids growing up… and an old bloke who moans. ROCK: I was lucky enough to see you perform So What, with Metallica, at Wembley in ’92, when you came on and did the encore there – that was cool. He was just flying the flag of… I always thought that Motorhead were sort of like the punk side of metal, and that Anti-Nowhere League were the metal side of punk.

In 2011, the band recorded the "This Is War" single, and accompanying video, which was followed by a tour with the UK Subs supporting Motörhead on a number of UK dates. And like Lemmy said, ‘your album’s shit,’ and I got a little upset with him and said, ‘well your fucking album’s shit.

It’s the basic [thing] of how we’re born into a cage we’re made into, and we live in it until we die, sort of thing.

Biker-punks Anti-Nowhere League have done NEC before, but their appearance was cast into doubt when singer Animal was glassed in the side of the head a few weeks ago. And in my book it says that I should’ve took his advice, that he was right, I just fell out with him [over it]. This line-up released the band's fifth studio album, Kings and Queens in 2005, which was released on the Captain Oi! After touring Germany and the Netherlands in early May 2010, the band and Johhny Skullknuckles parted company and Tommy H (Tom Hunt) was drafted in on guitar. The same year, the Anti-Nowhere League undertook a twenty nine date UK tour, and PJ left the band after the Glasgow gig in October 2006.

It is with a heavy heart we announce we will be unable to perform at this weekends BCN Beach Beer Chaos event. Imagine this: you secure an interview with your favourite punk singer of all time, prepare some awesome questions that span the near-forty year history of the band, and within minutes you realise he has just written a book about his life and is – quite fairly – reluctant to spill all the beans! The aforementioned Anti-Nowhere League are best known for their excellent 1982 debut album We Are…The League, featuring such classics as Can’t Stand Rock ‘N’Roll and I Hate People.
