About this deal

Drawing on claims from a range of global cultures and taking a multidisciplinary approach to the topic, Keener suggests that many miracle accounts throughout history and from contemporary times are best explai Keener points out that it was David Hume who first defined miracles as violations of natural law, and that since he was coming at things from a more deistic perspective that said the universe works according to natural laws, then miracles are (according to his definition) impossible, because that would be a violation of natural law…and that doesn’t happen. After reading the book, I find myself looking at my own upbringing in modern Western culture and thinking that, despite all the wonderful technological advances we are blessed with, despite all the learning, culture, and science we enjoy, maybe the flip side to all of that is that we are unknowingly imprisoned in cages of skepticism and cynicism that neuter our belief and faith in God and what God can do. As a pastor I am frequently asked if we should pray for miracles, why we don’t see more of them, and what to do when God doesn’t grant a miracle. Coincidently, seeing me walk in with the Waterstones bag nearly gave my partner a heart attack as he had bought me books for my birthday as well.

From the very beginning of the modern approach to the Gospels, the question of miracles brought controversy. The result is a book that is important not only for the historical study of Jesus and the New Testament but also for our understanding of our contemporary world beyond the boundaries of our social location and its worldview. But I don’t see how one can read some of these accounts and conclude that it is just the natural universe doing random, improbable things.Keener's bold exploration of the plausibility of past and present miracle claims should provoke interest--and debate--among a wide range of readers. Supernaturalists believe that interruptions or interferences can take place in this system of our Universe from some other system outside it. The writing rivals Shakespeare in its beauty, The language is expressed in Christian terminology, but this is a universal course, which offers tools, both theoretical and practical, to undo fear, guilt, anger, denial and dis-ease, and thus reveal the Inner Light in us all. Anne Booth has had all sorts of jobs, including washing up in a restaurant, working as a tour guide in a haunted almshouse, bookselling, teaching English in Italy, lecturing at university and being a long-term carer for her elderly parents.

It makes for a compelling backdrop, it’s just a shame that the plot falls flat of the overall promise. Lewis asserts that by this logic, the statement "I have reason to believe naturalism is valid" is self-referentially incoherent in the same manner as the sentence "One of the words of this sentence does not have the meaning that it appears to have", or the statement "I never tell the truth". Veteran journalist Tim Stafford does best what good journalists do best: reports on the world of miracles with neither skepticism nor naivete but with clarity and reverent honesty. Does a “miracle” or an “act of power,” always have to be something extraordinary like a healing or resurrection? If you are drawn to it, please begin by reading the Clarification of Terms in the back of the book so that when you begin, you'll know how certain words are being used.Schucman said that the book had been dictated to her, word for word, via a process of "inner dictation" from Jesus Christ. Tim Stafford puts the right person at the center of miracle stories: not the charismatic leader through whom miracles come, nor the person who is healed, but God himself. With gentle humour, and surprising twists and turns, this is just the book we need in these difficult times. Consider reading The Disappearance of the Universe: Straight Talk About Illusions, Past Lives, Religion, Sex, Politics, and the Miracles of Forgiveness before starting this.
