It has aromas of cinnamon-and-golden syrup biscuits, lemon, cloves, vanilla pods, honey, nutmeg and eucalyptus on the nose. I’m not a fan of straight whisky so I won’t try and go into detail of something I have little experience of but what I can say is even if you’re not a fan of straight whisky, but you do like sweet drinks, then this is a great middle ground of the two.

Early on, Highland Nectar acquired its distinctive triangular decanter-shaped bottle, and came to be sold in two expressions: Rare Old Whisky and Deluxe 12 year-old, at 43% abv. Opening the bottle presents your nostrils with a weak smell of whisky, which was surprising as I was expecting a stronger smell. The likes of cinnamon, ginger, citrus and vanilla impart plenty of festive feeling, this will certainly make a cosy winter warmer sipped neat, or splashed into hot drinks.

I have found the sweetness of some whisky liqueurs overpowering but with Highland Nectar, it is more the other flavours coming through and it’s delightful. Anyway, I then tried it with hot water, honey, orange juice and a few other things in various combinations and amounts, and the results were often very good. Enjoy Highland Nectar neat or over ice as an after-dinner sipper, mix it with soda water for a sweet, refreshing Highball or try it in a classic cocktail such as a Bobby Burns.
