While they can be found with chocolate and other flavors, standard Marie cookies are flavored with vanilla. In India, they are commonly eaten plain with tea or sold in bakeries after coating with chocolate and wrapped in foil. Starting with the melted chocolate covered the bottom, then dunk each biscuit in the milk/rum liquid and place them on top, covering the chocolate. It became popular throughout Europe, particularly in Portugal and Spain where, following the Civil War, the biscuit became a symbol of the country's economic recovery after bakeries produced mass quantities to consume a surplus of wheat.

The low moisture content ensures they won't easily fall apart when used as a dunking cookie for your morning coffee, afternoon tea, hot cocoa, or any other hot or cold beverage.
