About this deal

The valuable lesson inherent in The Black Snowman is not just for black children but for all who struggle for identity within their own worlds. Through the powers of a magical kente, a black snowman comes to life and helps young Jacob discover the beauty of his black heritage as well as his own self-worth. Although it may seem a little bit dark for young readers, I think that it touches on an issue that many students in urban schools can relate to. I just reread this book, pulled to it because of our snowy winter, our discussion regarding ethnic book awards, and my desire to fill my classroom bookshelves with books that work as mirrors for kids who used to look out the windows.

Jacob is still unconvinced so the snowman visits him that night and shows him many images of strong, brave Africans who should make Jacob proud of his heritage. The snowman uses the magical kente to lead Jacob inside the burning building so that he can save his brother.Summary: Christmas stories don’t usually begin in the grasslands of Africa with an old man preparing to tell the stories of his people, aided by his magic kente cloth.

The down-side of the story, was the predictably rash statements of the olderbrother, but the heartfelt, indominable responses from the younger brother always kept the story alive. In spite of the negative aspects of his life (being black and poor), Jacob learned that he had much of which to be proud. May have some underlining and highlighting of text and some writing in the margins, but there are no missing pages or anything else that would compromise the readability or legibility of the text.

A time where I felt embarrassed, ashamed, even cheated for being born into my race, similar to the young boy. As a teacher I would use this story to reinforce the importance of descriptive writing and also building upon characters. The characters in this book give us a story of how one should be proud of their heritage and who they are.It gripped me, and I raced thought it, imagining myself reading it to my children and grandchildren.
