You ask how come they have been around all this time, I'll tell you Gomez are one of the best bands of all time. Gomez’s drummer Olly Peacock commented; “ Liquid Skin was the step from the four track and recording in a garage to us accepting – in the most ridiculous way – that we were now doing music professionally. That was evidenced in the fact that the group’s debut album, the aptly dubbed Bring It On, was accorded the Mercury Prize in 1998 and elevated their awareness in the process.

Acoustic guitars lead the majority of the songs, which are accompanied by horns, strings, and keyboards. A unique take on guitar music and a blend of various styles and genres, it acts as an insight into the other side of 1990’s guitar music. Groups like Pulp and Suede and Elastica and The Charlatans (their real name) were so English that you couldn’t help but roll your eyes at them a little; you either had to know what public school and Bovril and test cricket were or pretend you did to appreciate them as an American. Following track ‘Revolutionary Kind’ maintains the albums the acoustic soul of the record, whilst synth notes permeate the track, demonstrating the band’s ability to contort genre as well as the influence of dance and electro.Originally released in 1999, the album reached number two in the UK album charts, following up their Mercury-winning debut Bring It On. Although, many of the tunes came from the same process as the debut, Liquid Skin is a more ambitious, more eccentric, “less pop and less innocent” take on their blues-influenced sound.

Gomez headlined Splendour a couple of years after Liquid Skin came out, and it was an absolute blast. Within the tracks climax it breaks into an acoustic showcase, giving the track something of a grandiose feel. Gomez never seemed to make any deliberate play for stardom, but they achieved their due recognition regardless.Las Vegas Dealer" begins as a psychedelic piece and vocal harmonies in the vein of the Moody Blues, before incorporating Eastern rhythms. What’s funny about Gomez touring behind Liquid Skin (in the UK and in Australia, anyway, where they’ve maintained more of a following) is that they can’t possibly make another record that sounds like it. CMJ New Music Report ranked the album at number 13 on their list of the Top 30 Editorial Picks of 1999. The bedroom “communal” songwriting amongst friends became untethered by possibility, which can be heard in the album’s world of sound. XS Noize looks back on this momentous release from a band that would become the ‘Fab Five’ of the ‘80s.

Nostalgia has brought the excitement of old back around for both fans and the band, starting with the lavish reissue of debut Bring It On in 2018 and a subsequent tour. However, there is more genuine gold to be found on this expanded reissue, as the unreleased recordings provide some fine enhancements to the original release.
