About this deal

As always, Tess is a pro at maneuvering forensics and police procedurals, well-developed relatable characters, and twisty plots to keep you glued to the pages.

A recent widow, she was transitioning to a new life alone, but has now been found brutally murdered in her home. The focus is on relationships between family, friends, and neighbors, the good and the bad, and the downright deadly. Tess Gerritsen's plotting is superb, with the story swinging back and forth enticingly between different narrators, maintaining the reader's interest throughout. I detested the Angela character, don’t waste your time with it, which is sad as I was looking forward to it. Tess's first medical thriller, Harvest, was released in hardcover in 1996, and it marked her debut on the New York Times bestseller list.Critics around the world have praised her novels as "Pulse-pounding fun" (Philadelphia Inquirer), "Scary and brilliant" (Toronto Globe and Mail), and "Polished, riveting prose" (Chicago Tribune). When Rizzoli and Detective Barry Frost talk to her shocked colleagues, none can believe anyone would have reason to kill this dedicated nurse. There were times when Angela’s behavior seemed close to being outrageous but I couldn’t ignore having the same concerns she felt. Bonus points for the ringtone allocated to Angela on Jane’s phone and the reveal of Maura’s secret talent. With a teenaged daughter who randomly disappears, Angela wonders of there is something going on behind closed doors, but she is shunned away by the family and Detective Rizzoli as well.

You’re provided with plenty of information and background on the characters as to not feel you’re missing anything. But Jane isn't taking her seriously and is busy trying to catch Sofia's killer and figure out what, if any connection, there is to Sofia's death and the hit-and-run several months ago to Amy Antrim, a young college student whose doctor father worked with Sofia. When Jane discovers that Sophia’s murder was linked to a hit-and-run that happened months previously, she is even more unsettled about the case. It was something her mother taught her long ago: In the morning you offer your guest coffee, in the afternoon you offer tea.

Absolutely first rate - readers will be thrilled and delighted by this new Rizzoli and Isles outing! With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review. Meanwhile Rizzoli’s mother Angela is busy keeping a watchful eye on her neighbours when she notices something strange about the new couple across the street. But lest the reader get too carried away with the Suarez murder, and while Jane finds herself immersed in that investigation, Angela Rizzoli vies for her daughter’s attention with a mystery of her own.Whereas it’s true that Listen to Me wasn’t my personal favourite, I still relished this read, and took great pleasure in indulging in Jane, Maura, and co. I knew all of these things would make sense at some point and I was doggedly as determined as Jane to unearth the answers. Angela spends her time investigating the mystery of why the new couple renting number 2533 aren’t being neighbourly and the case of a missing teenager, all while facing off against her archenemy and checking out the man across the street. Maura Isles plays a small but significant role, and demonstrates that she has more than one string to her bow. Her books have been translated into 31 languages, and more than 15 million copies have been sold around the world.

But Gerritsen is a master at weaving storylines together seamlessly to create a gripping narrative that you won’t want to put down. I started reading these books awhile ago and was hooked by the characters and also enjoyed the television series.Yet, maybe Angela is on to something this time as her new neighbors aren't friendly at ALL: they don't want her prize-winning zucchini bread, they've installed bars over the windows, they keep the shades drawn all day, and she's pretty sure the guy has a gun. As an anthropology student at Stanford University, she catalogued centuries-old human remains, and she continues to travel the world, driven by her fascination with ancient cultures and bizarre natural phenomena. I particularly enjoyed Angela Rizzoli’s character in this story and liked how Gerritsen used her to highlight how older women are often invisible and easily dismissed. And their business and maybe theirs as well… She absolutely delighted me as I followed her around her neighbourhood.
