Andrew Spicer, University of the West of England: The Creative Producer – The Michael Klinger Papers; • Paper Given at the University of Stirling Conference, Archives and Auteurs – Filmmakers and their Archives, 2–4 September 2009.

Jack is also concerned about the fate of Frank's fifteen-year old daughter, Doreen, who is now orphaned. The film was nominated for Worst Actor ( Sylvester Stallone) and Worst Remake or Sequel at the 21st Golden Raspberry Awards in 2000. His memory will live on in film, through one of the greatest British films of all time and his other works. Anyway, the movie reminds me of a polished piece of glass-- just about as cold and shiny and needing no depth. Marc Savlov of The Austin Chronicle said that "the film itself is a muddle, but what is good is Stallone".

Usually we get all flash and no humanity, lots of fancy camera tricks but no feel for the criminal strata of society".

Although she had appeared in The Avengers and A Family at War on television, this was Scottish-born Dunham's film debut. Brumby admits involvement in the murder, warning Jack that killing him will force him to run for the rest of his life. Perhaps it's because Caine is a Londoner while the tone of this novel was so unremittingly Northern that a Cockney wide-boy, no matter how hard, would stand out like a Chihuahua at a dog track. Giving his reasons for wanting to be involved with the film, the actor said "One of the reasons I wanted to make that picture was my background. Since his brother never drank, Jack is suspicious and digs into his brother's final days to figure out what happened. In Sight and Sound, Tom Milne said the film was well-constructed and had good characterisation, but lacked the mystery and charisma of the earlier American crime films it attempted to emulate. Over a short and action-packed weekend, he single-handedly takes on all the dirty footwork to get to the bottom of his brother's death. I was annoyed by his over-detailed psychoanalysis of people he sees, based solely on their dress and facial expressions. DVD was released in Region 1 on February 13, 2001, [5] and Region 2 on 24 June 2002, it was distributed by Warner Home Video.

After the film Edwards found work as a character actor and appeared regularly in the TV show Minder. Paice agrees; he tries to sucker punch Jack, but Jack floors him with one punch before brutally beating Paice to death. The Pelaw Hussars, a local juvenile jazz band and majorette troupe, also appear and perform two numbers, " When The Saints Go Marching In" and " Auld Lang Syne".Klinger was worried that the debut director might be overwhelmed with too many options, but Hodges said he and Atkinson got on very well. Considering the movie adaptation of this novel is one of my favorite crime films, it's hard to give the book that inspired the movie anything less than 5 stars. I should have done my best a long time ago to put it back on the radar for those readers who would really appreciate the atmospheric smokestacks, flash talking hardcases, dark rust, and volcanic heat of the book that launched a genre of British hardboiled crime in the 1970s.

Ted Lewis died in 1982 having published seven more novels and written several episodes for the television series Z-Cars.

The descriptions of the steelworkers pubs was accurate and the casual violence of the area is true to life. As I read the dialogue, of course I hear Michael Caine’s voice, and much of the dialogue was lifted almost directly from the book for use in the movie. The tricks reader needs to be taken along and walked along with the characters as the crime is committed. That Lewis wrote it in six weeks shouldn’t have come as a surprise; he was capable of great bursts of creative energy, yet somehow it still magnifies the achievement.
