About this deal

Birgitte intervenes, having grown suspicious that she did not wake with Siuan and used the ring to enter herself, but is transformed into a child. Continuing the epic tale of Rand al Thor, Jordan uses this novel to delve deep into the lives of our heroines. Moiraine arrives with Egwene and gives Rand two letters, one from Moiraine to Rand and the other to Thom Merrilin. This is the book where we get a much stronger bleed through of Lews Therin into Rand’s head and we get Rand talking to / arguing with his past life. Rand, Egwene, and Aviendha have just about worn themselves out channeling lightning and fire at the Shaido.

Moiraine gives Rand two letters—one for him to read later, the other for Thom Merrilin—and claims he needs to see something down at the docks.Starscape, a new imprint, launches a list of science fiction and fantasy titles aimed at readers aged 10 and up, adapted from acclaimed adult titles (see details in Children's Books, Jan. I think the execution of the concept of Rand having numerous lovers will annoy me in later installments. The fifth novel in the Wheel of Time series - one of the most influential and popular fantasy epics ever published. Mat lets slip Rand’s plans in front of Melindhra, who tries to kill him with a dagger marked with Sammael’s sigil. The characters rarely seem to have goals, and when they do, they’re either incredibly specific and small or vague and little progress made towards them. Nynaeve and Elayne pack and say their goodbyes, then hurry to the boat, guarded by Galad, Uno, and the other Shienarans. Today we’re going to talk about The Fires of Heaven, a novel of which I remembered far less than I expected, especially in comparison to how much I clearly remembered the events of the first four books. Despite Egwene warning Nynaeve through a dream about the dangers of the world of dreams, Nynaeve still visits Telaranrhiod alone trying to work with Birgitte to track the forsaken Moghedien. And like the line, while blame can be shifted, the hurt remains and the result is ultimately the same — it's over. They argue, then make up, and Nynaeve spots someone watching them and sends Siuan out of the Dream, but Moghedien catches her and holds her there. Among many other things, it is a Warder's place to tell his - her - Aes Sedai when she pushes herself too hard. Stuff happens in the last 100-odd pages that doesn’t feel set up at all and almost like there was a “I need action here to finish the book” motive behind it.

I wasn’t even that annoyed that Perrin, one of my favorite characters, didn’t show up because I know Jordan would have found a way to make his sections tedious. Having rated all the previous books in the series 5 stars already, it’s not possible for me to go any higher. Moghedien follows them back to the reflection of the circus wagons and attacks, but is shot by Birgitte. Nynaeve wakes, sobbing about Birgitte’s disappearance, but Thom and Juilin arrive with the unconscious archer in their arms. You can, though, see his effects on the Two Rivers during various scenes in Tel'aran'rhiod where evidence is clear of homes are being rebuilt after the Trolloc raids, along with new homes. It seems to me that kings - and queens - can be fools when they forget what they are and act like who they act, but they're worse when they only remember what they are and forget who. I spent most of the novel wondering if this was that book, because that’s something I remember happening, and Moiraine spends the entire novel with a frantic sense of urgency that she needs to teach Rand everything she can to prepare him - almost as if she knows (and she may, having gone through the ter’angeal rings assuming it’s not the other doorway) that her time is short. Rand declines to explain that Isendre is a Darkfriend, fearing that Asmodean will be uncovered if he does. I think, five books in, I’ve worked out why the pacing for these books always seems all over the place for me – and why that makes them feel so long.

During the ensuing battle, Rahvin kills Mat, Asmodean, and Aviendha, but Rand hunts down Rahvin in Tel'aran'rhiod and destroys him with balefire, thereby reversing the deaths of Mat, Asmodean, and Aviendha. Nynaeve meets with Birgitte in Tel’aran’rhiod, then separately with Egwene and one of the Wise Ones. You can make a sword from the Power, or kill without, but suddenly you are wearing steel on your hip again, Why? Despite the chaos swirling around him, Rand continues to learn how to harness his abilities, determined to wield the One Power--and ignoring the counsel of Moiraine Damodred at great cost.He seems to have placed her under some sort of compulsion, turning her into his puppet and taking complete control of her throne: He has replaced the men in Morgase’s army with his own and has used Morgase to rid Camelyn of anyone loyal to her.
