The fourth game in the Dark Cities series – Bristol follows Salem, Deadwood and Tortuga in embodying a ‘Horrible Histories’ style take on some of the darkest chapters of our collective civilisation. In Battlestar Galactica, Dead of Winter, and Dark Moon, a crisis check might fail through no fault of the players. It is certainly a common phrase, although I’ve found that enforcing the phrase is even more satiating than hearing it. Also if you look at that gamefound, it's easy to be deceived---the actual gameplay portions are not cheap but aren't over the top expensive. The rules generate an interesting tension by acknowledging that it’s easier to win with the plague but also requiring healthy players to avoid catching it.Likewise, the tension of navigating and escaping Bristol healthy and unharmed is a roller coaster of a journey. But over the course of the remaining game, there’s nothing preventing a future mingle or remedy from decreasing your symptom number below six — and then lying about having caught the plague earlier when the end-game reveal comes around.

At first, I couldn’t believe that Travis was so consistently comfortable with taking a hammer to the very thing that was going to pay the bills and feed his family. The Black Death certainly wasn’t a time of fun and games, even if Bristol 1350 happens to be a fun game about the Black Death.

Yeah, you can lose arms and legs, there are spinning floor blades and pit traps, lootable containers on the board.
