Orangutans can grow up to around 200 lbs, and their arms surpass their legs in length. They can grow from 1.10m to 1.40m tall and are mainly frugivorous but also eat other plant parts and small animals such as ants, termites, bird eggs, etc. They are bigger than a monkey but smaller than a gorilla. These mammals spend much of their time searching for food and nourishment. Orangutans are active during the day time, living in the canopy among the trees, high above the forest land. They use all four limbs and hook-shaped hands to carefully meander and grasp their way through the treetops. Males have a throat sac and large cheeks to make calls to their neighboring orangutans. The amount of food depends on the rainfall; on average, there is about 14 feet worth of rainfall each year to nourish the Orangutans' surrounding environment. A very intelligent mammal, they use the surrounding nature to create shelters from the rain for the evening and even add soft spaces like leaf piles for cushions. [36] The cranium is elevated relative to the face, which is incurved and prognathous. [34] Compared to chimpanzees and gorillas, the brow ridge of an orangutan is underdeveloped. [37] Females and juveniles have relatively circular skulls and thin faces while mature males have a prominent sagittal crest, large cheek pads or flanges, [34] extensive throat pouches and long canines. [34] [18] :14 The cheek pads are made mostly of fatty tissue and are supported by the musculature of the face. [38] The throat pouches act as resonance chambers for making long calls. Orangutans live in primary and secondary tropical forests located in Southeast Asia. Typically found in Malaysia and Indonesia, these long-armed, orange-haired mammals have characteristics that are very similar to humans. Living in rich and deep forests, they prefer flooded plains or river valley forests as they provide rich land for foraging their nutrients like wild fruits such as lychees and figs. Orangutans sleep and live in the trees. They build nests on top of the treetops, much like little forts that can be thrown together in minutes. These animals enjoy a warm climate, with temperatures ranging from 18 to 38 degrees Celsius. The warm and humid rainforest climate creates a perfect environment for the orangutans to play amongst the trees, grab fruit and enjoy their relaxed lifestyle. Near the end of 2020 leading into 2021, memers began to step away from penis jokes and started using the image more as an exploitable, replacing the words "where" or "banana" in image macros to change the context (examples from late 2020 shown below, left and right). The word was first attested in English in 1693 by physician John Bulwer in the form Orang-Outang, [1] [7] and variants ending with -ng are found in many languages. This spelling (and pronunciation) has remained in use in English up to the present but has come to be regarded as incorrect. [8] [9] [10] The loss of "h" in utan and the shift from -ng to -n has been taken to suggest the term entered English through Portuguese. [4] In Malay, the term was first attested in 1840, not as an indigenous name but referring to how the English called the animal. [11] The word 'orangutan' in Malay and Indonesian today was borrowed from English or Dutch in the 20th century—explaining why the initial 'h' of 'hutan' is also missing. [4]

The word orangutan appears in its older form urangutan, in a variety of premodern sources in the Old Javanese language. The earliest of these is the Kakawin Ramayana, a ninth-century or early tenth-century Javanese adaption of the Sanskrit Ramayana. In these Old Javanese sources, the word urangutan refers only to apes and not to forest-dwelling human beings. The word was not originally Javanese, but was borrowed from an early Malayic language at least a thousand years ago. Hence the ultimate origin of the term "orangutan" as denoting the Pongo ape was most likely Old Malay. [2] Robeson, Dave (1935). Al G. Barnes, Master Showman, as told by Al G. Barnes. PMC 6707206. PMID 31444387. The greatest threat to the orangutan is deforestation, as they are continuously losing more and more of their habitat, giving them less space to expand. Over time, the loss of land has impacted the orangutans' ability to procreate. Some sections of forested habitats occupied by orangutans are now protected to ensure the species can continue to thrive without being obstructed by human activity like logging. Females can only reproduce a small number of offspring throughout their lifetime, making it difficult to maintain a rising population rate. When orangutans can't find the food they need in the forest, they enter areas like farms and agricultural spaces that put them at risk of being hunted by humans for becoming a nuisance. Adult females travel through the forest with their dependent offspring. Females do not live in tight social groups, but they are familiar with and have relationships with other females in the area. Adult males have large home ranges that overlap those of multiple females. Males typically range alone except when they mate with females, forming consortships that last up to several weeks. Males may also join other orangutans of various sexes and ages in feeding aggregations. Individuals within a certain range appear to know others and interact comfortably when they encounter each other. Brady, Heather (18 May 2017). "Extremely Rare Albino Orangutan Found in Indonesia".
