About this deal

In a recent blog —“ Best Way to Twist Electric Wires Together”— our illustrious editor-in-chief and principal bottle washer, Max (the Magnificent) Maxfield, described several unaided ways to attach one wire to another. My first thought was, I hope the power is off!, followed by, This looks like finger blisters to me . The connections look permanent and tedious to complete, while my own experience is one that favors speed with the possibility of re-connection. I believe that in early USA houses were mainly built with wood and that a pair of bare wire conductors would be strung from nails. Probably Elizabeth might be able to confirm this?

If a mains cable needs to be joined underground, the joint must be totally waterproof long term. The only realistic way to achieve this is to place the connection in a plastic housing, and fill it with resin. Suitable resin filled connector kits are available. Underground electricity distribution uses the same connectors in a larger size. While wires may be crimped, they should not be heavily tinned with solder prior to installation in a screw terminal, since the soft metal will cold flow, resulting in a loose connection and possible fire hazard. [ citation needed] Screw connectors sometimes come loose if not done up tightly enough at fitting time. Verifying adequate tightening torque requires calibrated installation tools and proper training. In the UK, all screw connectors on fixed mains installations are required to be accessible for servicing, for this reason. [ citation needed] Advantages and disadvantages [ edit ] Two types of screw terminals showing a significant development in design. Basic, with the wires held between the screw heads and the terminals (left) and with the wires held, reversely, between the metal clamping plates and the rear of the terminals (right). Over the last 70 years I have seen house and factory wiring practice change, but there are plenty of legacy installations in Britain which should be immediately scrapped if they were inspected now.By the way I am way ahead of the proposed British house wiring regulations as every circuit in my house is covered by its own individual RCBO(Residual Current Circuit Breakers with Overcurrent Protection). As soon as double pole versions of these become reasonably priced I will be upgrading them.

Now that I have opened the door to IDT, there are a few more butt-splice connectors that can make life easier. For example, there is the Keystone i-Clamp, as shown in Figure 8 and described in the link. The wire may be wrapped directly under the head of a screw, may be held by a metal plate forced against the wire by a screw, or may be held by what is, in effect, a set screw in the side of a metal tube. The wire may be directly stripped of insulation and inserted under the head of a screw or into the terminal. Otherwise, it may be either inserted first into a ferrule, which is then inserted into the terminal, or else attached to a connecting lug, which is then fixed under the screw head.

Small diameter flexes and some cordgrip designs result in the plug cordgrip failing to grip the flex. This can be remedied by putting the flex 360 degrees round the cordgrip before tightening, like so: Scottish Highlands, areas which we class as zone 1 are post codes: AB30-38, AB44-56, FK17-99, G83, IV1-28, IV30-32, IV33-39, IV52-54, IV63, KW1-14, PA21-33, PA34-40, PH18-26, PH30, PH31-41, PH49-50 Anyone familiar with automotive wiring will know about spade terminals (Figure 3). These terminals are crimped onto a stripped piece of wire. A 3M Scotchlok Got to say I have only ever use these on low voltage car electrics and they are great for patching the trailer wiring on the car wiring loom. For house wiring I tend to consider them in the same frame as wire nut.

Flex ends need twisting and folding over before use, and should not go in the same hole as cable, or the flex connection can be weak and electrically inadequate. Lone cables going into a connector terminal are bent double to ensure good grip. I also quite like the single ended screw connectors that are a cross between eurostrip and wire nuts:In many countries you would be out of a job as there are no controls on how a domestic installation is undertaken and certainly junction boxes become irrelevant to most DIY home installers. I know the reaction you are going through, especially as British wiring regulations are some of the most stringent in the world. The aforementioned butt-splice connection is forever. However, there is a cross between the butt-splice and flying blade approaches that is often referred to as a “bullet” connection (Figure 6).

Screw terminals are low in cost when compared to other types of connectors, and can be readily designed into products for circuits carrying currents of from a fraction of an ampere up to several hundred amperes at low to moderate frequencies. The terminals easily can be re-used in the field, allowing for the replacement of wires or equipment, generally with standard hand tools. Screw terminals usually avoid the requirement for a specialized mating connector to be applied to the ends of wires. A small number of old mains plugs use screw connections where the flex goes under the screw head and around the screw shank. There is a tendency for these screws to push strands out when tightened, and too often most of the strands end up not connecting. Make the stripped flex end long enough to go nearly all the way round the screw shank, and twist the strands fairly tightly to minimise strand pushout. A small washer under the screw head also minimises the problem.Depending on the voltage and the current, there are standards that govern these connections. These standards are there for a reason, and you ignore them at your peril — sometimes in unexpected ways. For example, a friend had pot lights installed by some contractor at the lowest price. An insurance claim for an unrelated fire was rejected by the insurance company because the pot light installation was not to code. Bearing all of this in mind… In-line connectors Soldered wires should not be put into screw connections, the 2 aren't a safe combination. The first problem is that solder is soft and tends to creep under screw pressure, leaving a weakly clamped joint after a while. The other is that the soldering of stranded wire makes strands more likely to break. Soldering screwed wires increases the odds of fault& fire. Figure 4: A floating blade terminal. The color of the insulation indicates the wire gauge to be used. There are many variations of insulation, from none to completely covered. There are also many manufacturers. This is a Panduit DNF14-250FIM-M. (Source: Digi-Key online catalog) Eurostrip– we also used to call it “Chocolate strip” even though it was made of soft plastic and could not be snapped. I thought it was from the segmented appearance. As acceptance engineer I felt I should be able to terminate the MICC myself if I was going to downgrade or condemn an installation.
