No sapient could sustain happiness all of the time, just as no one could live permanently within anger, or boredom, or grief. In part, this is because Ashby treats most of the crew as his friends, and consults them on important decisions where possible. I found it a nice book to take me through a couple of weeks of soul-shattering exam prep, a few short chapters at a time, but I'm sure it works just as well as a quick read. The deliberateness with which characters often address each other and try to pre-empt each other's concerns. That being said, bad things do happen and there is some serious drama but you won't feel sad or helpless like I did at times when reading some other amazing yet depressing sci fi books - cough cough Parable of the Talents cough.

I liked antisocial scientist Corbin’s development but it did feel like it kind of came out of nowhere after 60% of a book where he was barely present, while Ashby was a virtual nonentity to me. Despite her fear that she will reveal her lack of experience, she quickly settles into her new role as ship’s clerk.I presume I actually liked the personalities as well as would certainly enjoy to learn more regarding them.
