About this deal

Asbestos ends up in makeup because of poor regulations involving cosmetic-grade talc, which is also known as talcum powder. Talc and asbestos are minerals that form together. That means talc mined for commercial uses can be contaminated with asbestos — a known cause of lung cancer and mesothelioma. Face powders are an essential item to have in your makeup kit when you want a polished look that isn’t greasy or oily. If you use a liquid foundation as many people do, then applying a powder over top not only helps to set the product on your skin but also helps to ensure there isn’t additional shine. If you’ve got fine lines and wrinkles on your face, face powder can help to reduce the chances of your foundation settling into those creases. You can also use face powder to set other cream products other than foundation, such as cream eyeshadow. It’s probably wise to avoid talc in general. Some scientific research indicates talc may increase the risk of uterine and ovarian cancer in women and lung cancer among miners. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against the use of baby powder, which is predominately made of talc, because infants can easily breathe in the powder. The EPA tried to ban asbestos in 1989, but pro-asbestos lobbying groups fought hard to successfully overturn the ban in 1991. The George H.W. Bush administration refused to allow the EPA to appeal. As a result, numerous products on the market contain asbestos, especially building materials such as roofing and flooring supplies.

The FDA’s review tested 43 cosmetic samples in 2019 and found that nine of them contained asbestos. It notified the public of the results and announced it would test 50 more cosmetic samples in 2020. The FDA expected to release the results in early 2021 but has not announced any new updates.

Overall Take

A Beauty Secret since 1935. The creation of a visionary Master Perfumer, Francois Coty, Airspun is a loose face powder blended with air, to provide the ultimate coverage with a lightweight feel. It features particles that are twirled and swirled until they reach a cloud-like softness. This translucent loose face powder can be used to hide tiny lines, wrinkles, and blemishes to give a flawless finish. It is designed with tints that are spread throughout, which are made to lay flat and evenly on the skin. It can be used as a foundation or to set your makeup in place as a finishing agent. This Coty Airspun loose face powder is also dermatologically tested and long-lasting. It comes in a beautifully decorated container that can be easily stored in a vanity drawer or placed in a purse to take with you while on-the-go. Not sure if you need setting powder of finishing powder? Some brands actually use these terms interchangeably, which makes things a bit more confusing. However, setting powder is typically what you use on top of foundation to ensure it doesn’t go anywhere. It also helps to reduce shine. Finishing powder is similar but it’s for a specific purpose. If you’re going to be photographed and want to have that flawless airbrushed look, finishing powder blurs your fine lines and wrinkles perfectly. While setting powder can be tinted or translucent, finishing powders are typically white. FDA. (2019, October 18). FDA Advises Consumers to Stop Using Certain Cosmetic Products. Includes powder puff applicator. Ingredients Long-term exposure to asbestos through talcum powder is known to cause mesothelioma and ovarian cancer. While asbestos-contaminated makeup hasn’t yet been associated with the development of diseases, the risk remains as long as talc goes unregulated in the U.S. In 2019, retailers Justice and Claire’s recalled their children’s makeup products that tested positive for asbestos. Beauty Plus Global recalled its City Color products that tested positive for asbestos in 2019 as well. None of these entities have announced plans to stop using talc or stop selling talc-based cosmetics.

LIGHTWEIGHT FORMULA: Exclusive microspun formula established in 1935 for ultra-lightweight, cloud-like feel The first main difference is that while TiO2 gives a nice broad spectrum protection, Zinc Oxide has an even nicerand even broader spectrum protection. It protects against UVB, UVA II, and UVA I almost uniformly, and is considered to be the broadestrange sunscreen available today. Congress. (n.d.). It’s up to consumers to protect themselves and their children from this risk because the government isn’t doing enough to regulate asbestos. What Does Asbestos-Free Actually Mean? As for the disadvantages, Zinc Oxide is also not cosmetically elegant. It leaves a disturbing whitish tint on the skin , although , according to a 2000research paper by Dr. Pinnell, it's slightlyless white than TiO2. Still, it's white and disturbing enough to use Zinc Oxide nanoparticles more and more often.EPA. (2020, September 25). Asbestos Laws and Regulations. While the FDA says that it “considers it unacceptable for cosmetic talc to be contaminated with asbestos,” there are no U.S. laws or regulations that strictly prohibit talc used in consumer products from containing asbestos.
