Upon arrival through semi ruined relics of industrialisation we entered the terrace day dreams are made of. The Cheese Wheel specialises in artisan-made cheese, craft beer and natural wine (Image: Manchester Evening News) Nestled in the Torrs Ravine in the middle of New Mills you’ll find Torr Vale Mill, a grade II-listed former cotton mill that has recently entered a new chapter of its long and storied life. Originally built in the 1780s, it is positioned in the centre of the Derbyshire town at the bottom of a dramatic 40-metre deep gorge, and is the place where two rivers - the Sett and Goyt - meet.

Serendipitously walking down some hidden steps after the bridge we noticed this awesome ( literally awesome ) terrace with people drinking on it. With a GMaps intervention we pinned it down and followed the route … via the wonderful path and millennium bridge over to the old Mill and reassuring signs for Shrub Club. Whatever we were going to do, we always wanted it to be transportive, somewhere you come into and you forget about everything else. We have a lot of people who say, ‘I only came for one and it’s eight hours later’”.

The prawn bloody Marie was a fun concept and tasty enough , maybe coulda been a bit more tobasco but otherwise very good. The “small” beef stew and potatoes plus cheese dish was actually quite large and very tasty, especially the slow cooked peppers and tomatoe off setting the richness of cheese and beef.Manchester’s connectedness to the wider countryside is one of the city’s best assets. Numerous walks with stunning views are reachable by a direct train ride from the city centre; better still, these routes are easily paired with some of the region’s best pubs. Picture this: a morning walking through woodland and perfumed heather before arriving, properly hungry, at a traditional boozer. Open fires in the winter, beer gardens in summer, and an impressive menu year-round – it’s the ideal formula for a restorative weekend, which is why we’ve put together this guide to country walks plus some of Greater Manchester’s top pubs. An interesting menu made it hard to choose… do we want a burger or one of these tapas sized plates ? We went for a mix… Sitting with that beer on the terrace, enjoying the vista and gorgeous white noise from the flowing river Goyt was a highlight of my trip to England. This is what I love and live for, these moments of awe, and joy of relaxed social comfort. Among other things.

Anyway we stayed longer than intended and enjoyed further beers and I tried an ale which was excellent and again served well. While the many years of textile production are now firmly behind it, the mill has not stopped being a hive of activity. Today, its various buildings - some of which were built in the 1800s - provide a home for what has become a hugely popular food and drink hub.
