About this deal

She spent three years researching it and, after performing the play at regional theatres (1993-97), had an eight-week run in the West End, at the Adelphi theatre (1997). The production was nominated for a Laurence Olivier theatre award. I adore Hylda Baker, I just love her unique brand of humour, and of course she's great, it must have been hard to find roles for someone so unique, she would definitely find her place with Nearest and Dearest and Not on your Nellie. Her mishaps with words are present, but used sparingly.

Monthly Film Bulletin said "Hearty over-acting from Hylda Baker cannot prevent this being just one more conveyor-belt North Country farce. All the old familiar jokes and situations are affectionately preserved, with a pop singer and coffee bar thrown in to prove that the film’s makers are bang up to date with the mood of the fifties." [3] GRO Register of Deaths: MAY 1986 17 74 SURREY MID-EASTERN - Hylda Baker, DoB = 4 February 1905 aged 81 Hylda Baker and Arthur Mullard performed a grotesque pastiche of the hit single You’re the One That I Want in 1978. From which musical did the song come? Actress Jean Fergusson, known for appearances in Last of the Summer Wine, wrote a biography and devised and starred in a tribute show, She Knows Y' Know!, at London's Vaudeville Theatre in 1997. The show won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Entertainment in 1998. He was most famous for portraying Harold Steptoe on TV, but in which 1966 Carry On film did he play Detective Sergeant Sidney Bung?Th play is a complicated one, but one that probably reflects the life of Hylda Baker. However, Jean Ferguson puts everything in to the part and she is so convincing and believable. She captures the personality and image of Hylda Baker perfectly. You could tell she had researched this character fully, as it felt at times that it was Hylda Baker on the stage herself! Many is used to describe count nouns or nouns that can be counted like books, ideas, leaves, and shoes. When using many, the noun will always be plural. Jean Ferguson recalls this edition of This Is Your Life in her book, She Knows You Know! reproduced here with kind permission of the author... Baker’s singing partner Arthur Mullard, pictured, starred in his own TV series with Queenie Watts in 1976. How well do you remember Hylda Baker and her co-stars? Why not test your knowledge in our quiz and compare your score with friends?

The papers of Hylda Baker relating to her life and career are housed in Lancashire Archives, [15] reference DDX 1683. I think this is a play for Hylda Baker fans and Music Hall lovers only. If you do not know the character then you might find parts of the play, particularly the humour, bizarre. Eurwyn sees Hylda's film She Knows Y'Know as one of the holy grails of British comedy. "We've lost so much over the years and I'm convinced many are still out there. You have to know where to look. Jean [Fergusson] tried the BFI, but the film wasn't in good condition so I put feelers out as a past film collector and went, let us say, to see a man about a dog! I found the film in immaculate condition. Nobody had watched it for half a century. It was a really good feeling, and I couldn't wait to see it."

My favourite part in this movie comes towards the end. It reminds me so much of the color - 'The Colour Purple'. It's the scene where - or it's the way Marilyn walks in the room brandishing a wedding ring and making the announcement 'I's Married Now' - "I Married Terry 3 Months Ago" - (in a snotty nose voice) - as if that makes everything alright and all the problems go away. Our popular nostalgia quiz this week focuses on Farnworth actress, comedienne and music-hall artist Hylda Baker, famous for playing Nellie Pledge in the sitcom Nearest and Dearest. During her time in Last of the Summer Wine, Fergusson took two roles in Coronation Street. In 1987, she played Helen Ashcroft, sister-in-law of Dr Lowther, at the time his cleaner, Hilda Ogden, left the street to move into a flat attached to his Derbyshire retirement cottage. In 1999, Fergusson played Gary Mallett’s mother in one episode.
