About this deal

Be sure to feed your plants with Boost All Purpose Plant Feed – specially formulated for use with peat free composts.

John Innes composts have had a special place in British gardening since the original design of the recipes in the 1930's. Purchased composts may legitimately vary to a considerable extent in texture as the medium loam recommended to make the composts may contain varying amounts of clay ranging from 10-20 percent and amounts of silt ranging from 30-50 percent.

Sand - The coarse sand or grit is used as a physical conditioner to allow excess water to drain from the compost and thus prevent water-logging. It contains a low, carefully balanced amount of fertilizer to give enough for growth but avoid scorching the delicate young roots. They mention that it's brilliant for growing from seed medium, it has a close to 100% germination rate, and is beneficial for seeds and sprouting seedlings.

Peat is used in the original recipe, but peat substitute may also be used and is environmentally preferable. In addition, texture will differ depending on whether stacked, rotted turf is used or whether the source is an arable field. Each of the John Innes Compost’s are produced, in various ratios, to produce a more specific compost.is a loam based sowing compost containing all essential nutrition and trace elements needed for healthy germination and seedling development.

John Innes No 2 contains moderate levels of fertilizer and is used for potting on plants at the next stage of growth, and most vegetables. b>Peat - Sphagnum Moss Peat contained within John Innes compost increases porosity, providing improved aeration and water-retaining capacity. The sphagnum moss peat in John Innes compost improves both the aeration and water-retaining capacity, which enables the compost to make maximum use of the nutrients and trace elements in fertilisers. This good absorption and release of water and nutrients is sometimes referred to as having a high level of “buffering”. The mix also has loam for perfect nutrient and moisture retention as well as sand and grit for excellent drainage. Our most popular compost, John Innes no3 compost is a rich mixture that is intended for final potting or for the re-potting of mature plants.
