You know about the Siegfried line? To dig trenches. And the first day three people were killed a few feet away. None of us children -- Russian prisoners and other conscripted workers. The nurses came and started crying. And in Stuttgart, our home town, our house was the only one standing. When I say standing, I mean the roof and windows are gone, and the doors. And, well, there you are. [9] Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, Past winners". Association for Library Service to Children ( ALSC). American Library Association ( ALA). The unknown often brings fear with it,” he once said. “In my books I try to counteract this fear, to replace it with a positive message. I believe that children are naturally creative and eager to learn. I want to show them that learning is really both fascinating and fun.” Caterpillar is a book of hope: you, too, can grow up and grow wings. Eric Carle in 1994 This handsomely-designed volume explores many facets of Eric Carle’s life and work. It includes an autobiography, illustrated with many photographs, telling of his early years in the United States, describing the roots of his inspiration, his art education in Germany, his career as a commercial artist on his return to the land of his birth, and his almost accidental discovery of his real vocation—creating beautiful picturebooks for young children. Essays and critical appreciations of his works, and color photographs showing how the artist creates his unique collage illustrations add to the interest and usefulness of this book. Fine reproductions of many of his best illustrations and a complete list of his books are included. The result is an array of books that are much more than the simple text within them. They are masterpieces in their own right, and for millions of children around the world, probably their very first introduction to the world of art. This isn’t to underplay the significance of the prose – those words teach kids that actions have consequences (The Very Hungry Caterpillar), change isn’t that bad (A House for Hermit), do what you love (Walter the Baker), being nice is better (The Grouchy Ladybug), focus on your work and put in your best, and the result will be there for everyone to see (The Very Busy Spider).

Like most anthologies there are weaker contributions and The Art of Eric Carle is not an exception. Well to precise, there were no weak contribution, but stylistically, it seems a tad repetitive as the story of the creation of The Very Hungry Caterpillar has been repeat at least three times. Mr. Carle is not a writer, he's candid about having strongly disliked school after kindergarten, when his family moved to Germany, and not having a consistent education as a child due to war, destruction and evacuation. That said, his writing is spare but pleasingly witty.
