Besides being wasteful, doing so will make the whole surface less tacky, forcing you to wait longer before moving on to your next corner. As Brian shows in the video, you don’t need to apply a heavy dose of Spray Adhesive to your drywall or your corner bead — quite the opposite! Run a length of Fast Edge through a hopper, or use a knife or compound applicator tube to apply mud directly on the drywall. The hopper installs Mud Set 90 Degree Bead, Mud Set Bullnose and Splayed Beads with ease to help minimize jobsite delays.

Mud Set Beads are drywall corner beads made from high-impact, rigid vinyl, featuring Trim-Tex's patented Mud Lock Technology.I think you'd be OK with metal bead with only the biggest gaps prefilled with some chunks of drywall and setting compound. When you said it's still soft, and it cracked: it sounds like a thick layer of mud is still still shrinking as it dries.

I think you will have to cut back more, certainly to the short side, and remove anything that protrudes .
