About this deal

Weighing just under 10g and measuring slightly less than 31mm, bronze pennies continued to be minted for general circulation until 1967. Final proof sets were minted in 1970, before decimalisation in 1971 marked the end of the old penny.

This particular year, the US Mint changed the US coin system. It included eliminating about 90% silver pieces, replacing proof sets with Special Mint Sets, and temporarily removing mint marks. The pound was the same pound the UK has today, but it was a banknote, not a coin. The old penny was a large bronze coin. The shilling was a silver-coloured coin, before 1946 it contained real The 1965 Lincoln Memorial penny had a mintage of 1,497,224,900 and is considered common by many coin collectors. One of the most important reasons those particular doubled dies are worth so much is because the doubling on those coins is pretty drastic and can be easily seen with the naked eye. This helps to instigate great demand for such pieces — squeezing the supply and, therefore, raising prices. SMS coins share some qualities with both proof coinage and business-strike (aka circulation strike) pieces:

1965 Lincoln Penny Errors

Many people ask, 'what is the value of old money in today's money?'. This is a difficult question to answer. There are three values: the face value, the value in Striking of pennies for circulation restarted in 1961, and ran through in enormous numbers to 1967. The 1965 SMS pennies were made by the U.S. Mint for distribution only in SMS sets and were not placed into circulation to be spent as money.

As you can guess, the Lincoln penny is technically an obsolete series in every possible sense. Even though their production stopped almost 15 years ago, you can still find billions in circulation. In fact, it is reasonable expecting that they will exist on the market as long as the law against melting copper coinage is actual. All this kerfuffle interfered with the mint dates and mint volumes for various coins. Since so many coins were being hidden in drawers, the mint retained the 1964 date on Quarters and Pennies until 1966. This meant lots of 1c and 25c dated 1964 were actually produced in 1965 and 1966. Roughly 1M of the 1965 Pennies were coined in 1965. The rest were made in 1966.But what about inflation? According to the retail price index, prices have gone up by a factor of fifteen since 1965.
