About this deal

I could have shown Mum my scarlet nose or my scratches but I didn’t dare. She never suspected a thing. Also, I didn't want to carry hate in my heart forever, and not for an author's long bibliography (not the author herself, to be clear) and works that had been a part of my childhood, and of my start in my reading life. She’s a strange, dreamy girl, one of my favourites out of my imaginary girls. Casper Dream describes his violet fairy as ‘A small, shy fairy, purplish-blue, easily trampled upon.’ Certainly Violet’s older brother Will walks all over her. Will teases and torments his sister, but he can invent magical games and Violet adores him. Will is very much a changeling child, in more ways than one. Casper Dream says ‘Fairies steal away beloved babies and leave a changeling child in their place. These elfin breeds are often evil, with difficult, demanding natures and enormous appetities.’

But the main bully actually doesn't turn out to be anything like that. Frankie and Sally find things in common, become close, and Frankie realises her feelings for the other girl are anything bit platonic. Llevo arrastrando el querer leer este libro desde que estaba en secundaria (al final nunca me decidí a comprarlo y el otro día lo vi en la biblioteca y tuve que llevármelo). Y no se que pensaba que iba a leer, pero esto no. Lovely to see mainstream and popular writers covering topics, themes and characters that will get their readers thinking and talking. I like how Jacqueline Wilson made Mab a realistic character. She can be a bit unlikeable and irritating. She went through family issues, foster care with her unstable typical JW mother and cheeky little brother. Also, why is Mab once again, ‘mousy, straggly thin hair’ and ‘skinny and small for my age’ ?? Like practically all the other Jacqueline Wilson characters have that stereotype. Perhaps Jacqueline relates to that because she might have been like that when she was younger. F. Paul Wilson: It's not my MIDNIGHT MASS. People have been asking me about this but it's an error. (I wish it weren't - I think @flanaganfilm would do a good job.)

Retailers:

Will wasn’t even at school yet but he made up plays that lasted for hours. No, not hours – and they can’t have been real plays. He just made Big and Little Growl dance about in front of me, one of them booming in a glorious great growl, one of them squeaking in a winsome weeny growl. I know that’s all it can have been, and yet the carpet around me sprouted forests and Big Growl and Little Growl padded about me on real paws. I reached out and patted their furry bodies and smelled the honey on their breath. F Paul Wilson really puts these good guys through hell and he gives no guarantees that they'll survive the experience.

Because the characters fell flat, I feel the plot did also. If it was different, I think the topic could have been handled better and more suited to children. In the end, as a reward for caring for her, Bindweed grants a wish for Mab and she meets her father once again. Mab realises he is an absolute, cowardly loser without any self esteem or strength…. How had she not seen it all along? Her and her mum and brother do a runner and go home. Then and there, they realise that their father didn’t deserve them and their peaceful, cosy warm lives. They continue living on, with their mums new boyfriend and Bindweed meeting her cult, I mean family, once again. JW has shown she's not afraid to include LBGTQ characters in her kids' books before (though in my opinion, 'Rent a Bridesmaid' contains her one true positive rep), and in 'Project Fairy', there is only the slight implication of queer content. When we first see Robin's group of five-year-old friends, a girl and a boy want him for a boyfriend. He agrees to be a boyfriend to both. Of course, this could be viewed as merely toddlers being cute (Mum is like, "Awe bless 'em!") and not understanding how relationships work. Plus the girl and boy aren't named and they don't appear again afterwards. Mab mentions her neighbours Michael and Lee twice or three times, and they might be a gay couple, but we never meet them, so am I reaching?I'm writing a review, which I don't normally do, because I was astonished that more people haven't come across this book. I chanced across it in the bookshop and bought it because I love a good spy novel. I was at a slight disadvantage, as this is apparently the third in a trilogy of novels, but that barely affected it at all, except some small parts where old angst was rehashed. Despite this, it was gripping from start to finish. A thriller which doesn't talk down to its readers and which looks at the human emotions behind the action. People aren't even safe from their own kind. Human 'cowboys' enlisted by the vampires herd other humans in return for the promise of the bite of eternal life - someday. I think what went wrong in this story is the multiplot storyline Wilson attempted. Violet has an obsession with fairies created by her favourite author Casper Dreams, struggles to make friends and is emotionally abused by her brother—who just happens to be adopted and uses that as his excuse for his behaviour.
