The Xplora X5 Play is a good-looking kid's smartwatch with some great ideas for encouraging activity. The safety features available for the parents are well implemented and allow you to monitor your child as needed. The microphone issues can pose problems when your child is making calls in noisy environments, and the preset reward system can be disappointing.In terms of the device itself, the watch is really well-built. When I first unboxed it and showed my wife, her response was that this seems like it could be a watch for a grown-up. The fit and finish of the plastic materials used for the casing are all very well done. It comes with a pre-installed screen protector covering the Gorilla Glass display with a small cutout for the front-facing camera. The watch is chunky but comfortable on the wrist and the 240 x 240 pixel 1.4in touchscreen is both bright and responsive. There’s a choice of watch faces and the ubiquitous step counter, which award kids with coins for activity.

After creating a user account, the app will prompt you to add a watch. Press "Add device", then "Scan code". Give the app permission to access your camera. It includes a 2MP camera and can store up to a thousand pictures on the device, and ours have spent hours just playing around with that function and recording themselves performing. The Xplora X5 Play is great for kids who need a little nudge toward a more active lifestyle. Its fun features also make it easier for kids to remember to wear it. After all, you can’t keep tabs on their location if the GPS watch is still at home on the charger. We can vouch that it does effectively encourage kids to want to walk more so they can amp up their step count - ours were running around the house to get their step count up, and begging to go on extra walks outside.
