The 120Hz refresh rate is here though, which the display updates 120 times per second, so twice as fast as the 60Hz ‘standard’ of many other smartphones (including the Note 20). A higher refresh rate makes motion look smoother, whether you’re playing games or swiping through menus, although depending on what you’re doing you won’t necessarily notice the difference. It’s worth pointing out that 120Hz is the maximum setting, and you can drop down to 60Hz in the settings if you want to save on battery life. The phone will be available in single SIM and dual SIM versions. There’s a microSD card slot, but that will take the spot of SIM2 – an eSIM may be enabled in some markets, which will solve this issue. The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE has a 6.5-inch screen, bigger than the 6.2-inch display on the Galaxy S20, but smaller than the 6.7-inch and 6.9-inch screens on the S20 Plus and S20 Ultra. This display is broken up by a ‘punch-hole’ cut-out in the top-center – it’s pretty small, and so doesn’t steal much screen space. Samsung's OLED panel really shined when watching an episode of Cobra Kai. As Sam LaRusso crashed into a dessert table, the explosion of color really came through, with pops of green, blue, brown and orange. I don't see it as a deal breaker, though it would be nice to have that battery life thingy where you see what status is your batery condition.
However, on our web surfing battery test, which involves continuous web surfing at 150 nits of screen brightness, the Galaxy S20 FE lasted only 8 hours and 58 minutes over AT&T's 5G network and 9:03 on Verizon's LTE network. (I don't have Verizon 5G in New Jersey). The handsets on our best phone battery life list all last 11 hours or more. At launch the following colors will be available: Cloud Red, Cloud Orange, Cloud Lavender, Cloud Mint, Cloud Navy and Cloud White. Note that some colors may not be available in all countries and for all configurations of the S20 FE. Unless you don't care about software suport for the future and you just want a decent device for light gaming and content consumption (oh yes, everything watched on this phone looks and sounds great).The IP68 rating means it's dust and water resistant (up to 1.5m for 30 minutes). It also has fingerprint and Samsung Pay capabilities and between 128GB and 256GB of internal storage. The S20 FE’s ultra-wide camera squeezes in twice as much of the scene you’re shooting compared to the main snapper – that’s more than comparable snappers on other devices. It captures shots at 0.5x zoom, compared to 0.6x on most, so you’ll see even more of your vista or group of friends in the frame. The Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G has a resistance rating of IP68. This means it's dust resistant and water resistant up to 1.5m deep for 30 minutes. However, it's not waterproof so isn't recommended for snorkelling. The selfie camera is different too, featuring a 32MP sensor (0.8 µm pixels) with 4-in-1 pixel binning. This cam appears to be the one we’ve seen in some A-series models.The 120Hz setting delivers smoother scrolling and better gameplay in a growing array of titles that support 120Hz panels. Thumbing through NYTimes.com was buttery smooth, and I enjoyed fluid animation when playing Marvel Contest of Champions as I used Iron Man to fire a laser at The Punisher. This doesn’t mean much when it comes to real-world performance, though. I’ve been using a Note 20 Ultra (with an Exynos 990) as my daily driver for the last month or so and I haven’t noticed any performance issues. Both phones are blisteringly fast to boot-up, whizz across the user interface without any stuttering (even at 120Hz) and neither grinds to a halt when running CPU-heavy applications such as Adobe Lightroom and Xbox Game Pass.
The Galaxy S20 FE has 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB storage as standard (but there's a 256 GB option). Note that the 5G version supports sub-6 networks (both Sa and NSA), the US is also getting a Galaxy S20 FE 5G UW with mmWave - this one will go up on Verizon.com on October 2. It’s also worth noting that the Galaxy S20 phones only let you enable either 120Hz or WQHD+ at the same time, not both simultaneously – so if you want to use 120Hz you have to downgrade the screen resolution to FHD+. So if you prioritize a fast refresh rate over resolution, you can effectively enjoy the same screen performance on the S20 SE as on its premium siblings.
It’s all in the design
The front-facing camera is a 32MP f/2.0 snapper, but note that if you take a regular selfie, you’re not getting a 32MP picture – that’s because this sensor is paired with a wide-angle lens. You’ll only get a high-res picture if you take a wider shot, while if it’s a close-up featuring just you, the photo will be automatically cropped.
