About this deal

In 2021, Ofsted published a research review into factors that influence the quality of geography education in schools in England. The report drew on research, including from the GA, to suggest that careful and deliberate sequencing is required if we wish students to build progressively and securely on their prior learning. interpret Ordnance Survey maps in the classroom and the field, including using grid references and scale, topographical and other thematic mapping, and aerial and satellite photographs This section provides guidance to support the planning and teaching of geography for 11-14 year old students (in years 7-9). In a Teaching Geography article, Martin (2014) summarised the key features of the KS3 geography PoS, observing that:

They will also build on their knowledge of relevant quantitative, qualitative and fieldwork skills (AO3) to: identify the position and significance of latitude, longitude, Equator, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, Arctic and Antarctic Circle, the Prime/Greenwich Meridian and time zones (including day and night) Next, students will look more closely at the physical geography of the UK where the concept of landscape will be introduced and developed. Fundamental physical process knowledge and understanding is key to this topic and students will use atlases and OS maps as well as a wider range of skills to explore these ideas, concepts and processes.

A coherent ks3 geography curriculum is one which not only matches (or exceeds) the ambition of the geography National Curriculum. It is also likely to be one where:Year 11 students will compound their learning of both knowledge and skills, will be exam ready for their GCSE and ready for the next step in their journey, whatever that might be. use maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate countries and describe features studied locate the world’s countries, using maps to focus on Europe (including the location of Russia) and North and South America, concentrating on their environmental regions, key physical and human characteristics, countries, and major cities
