About this deal

Whether your favorite style leans towards the gentler musings of Joni Mitchell or the tireless tirades of Rage Against the Machine, you can learn all about alternate guitar tunings from the greats and even develop your own alternate tunings to use and share. We’re particular fans of Nashville Tuning, DADGAD tuning, and Open E Tuning here at Stringjoy. Why are the guitar’s strings tuned the way that they are? This is a question that has been and continues to be researched, whined, wailed, and occasionally celebrated by guitar enthusiasts worldwide. While no one definitive answer has been universally embraced by the guitar-playing community, general historical fact plus a dash of common sense suggests a practical origin that has arisen from musical necessity.

Learning guitar strings notes doesn’t have to be hard work. It doesn’t even take long, provided you set your mind to it.In notation, notes can also be ‘flattened’. A flat symbol lowers the pitch note by a semitone (one fret). Therefore, if you see a flat sign next to a note, you should play it one fret lower. There’s no right or wrong answer to this question – it’s entirely up to personal preference. If you’re happy with the way your guitar looks, then there’s no need to change it. However, if you’re looking for a way to express your personality and style, then changing the color of your guitar is a great option. There are a few different ways to change the color of your guitar, including painting, staining, or using a decal. Whichever method you choose, make sure you take the time to prep the surface properly so that the new color will adhere properly and last for a long time.

If you find banding on strings you want to identify, try comparing them to a guide like this one from D’Addario. D’Addario uses either the same or similar color coding between different instruments. For example, it is easy to know which string is which whether you are on guitar or bass. Evidence of this is in Elixir’s most recent Optiweb electric sets. Over the years they have continued to thin out their coating and their latest electric offering is their ‘lightest coating yet’ and is described as having ‘the same crisp tone as an uncoated string’ and providing a ‘natural feel’. Fender Strings are probably the second most common string brand that color codes the ball ends of their strings. After the diagrams is an explanation of what to do if the note you wish to play is either sharpened (i.e. has a little # sign next to it), or flattened (i.e. has a little ‘b’ sign next to it). 1st (Top E) String Notes Guitar Top E String Notes Guitar B String Notes Guitar B String Notes Guitar G String Notes Guitar G String Notes Guitar D String Notes Guitar D String Notes Guitar A String Notes Guitar A String Notes Tab Guitar Bottom E String Notes Tab Guitar Bottom E String Notes Tab How To Play Sharp / Flat NotesEach diagram shows the notes of an individual string. After the twelfth fret the notes simply repeat along each string an octave higher. Fender does a nice little job of color coding the string as each color is one of their standard Fender colors like Sea Foam Green or Lake Placid Blue. Tablature: The number on a line represents the fret you should play on. As you can see in the preceding example, the first note is a 0 fret on the fifth string (a 0 means you play the open string). Which Is The A String In Guitar? Of course, each manufacturer will argue that their way is the best. For instance, the brands that coat the wire first before winding say that this helps to maintain a more natural feel and Elixir say that their coating prevents the little ridges between the windings from getting clogged up. Happily, however, once this basic task is accomplished, there is no end of alternate tunings that can open up whole new worlds of musicality as you continue your studies.

Learning guitar notes gives you a better understanding of how music works. Guitar Strings Tuning Chart You can try Googling the color code you have on your guitar, but it may be more hassle than it is worth. The simple reason why some string makers color code their strings is just to make it easier to identify the strings. So, while you are restringing your instrument, you can easily identify which string is which. Above - Image Courtesy of D'Addario. For D'Addario's latest XS Acoustic string range they've taken the decision to coat the outer surface of the string after it's been wound which is a first for any of their coated string ranges. Elixir does put a small paper tag on each string to help you identify the strings. These are easily removed before putting the string on the instrument. It’s a very broad topic, but if you see the patterns that I mentioned above, these should be D’Addario strings. Colored Guitar Strings Granted, adding a coating to strings does add an extra stage (or more) to the manufacturing process and as a result, coated strings do cost more than standard uncoated strings. However, if you look at the bigger picture, coated strings often work out more economical in the long term…. If you want to produce a similar sounding tune, you’ll need a heavier string gauge. If you intend to use strings that are too thin, it is important to understand that doing so is hazardous. Strings with lighter gauge strings are easier to press down and fret on, just as strings with heavier gauge are. Guitar strings with colored sound will not harm your instrument and will make it sound different. Red Hannabach strings, according to our customers, sound warmer than nylon strings in general. Blue nylon strings, according to some, sound a little cooler. When it comes to the quality of the sound produced by guitar strings coated or uncoated, which one is better? For instance, an A guitar string from one manufacturer won’t necessarily have the same color as an A guitar string from another manufacturer. If you have guitar strings with color coded ball ends, they’re likely D’Addario, but there are other brands that use a similar codification.

For obvious reasons, it is essential for guitar students to start learning how to play the guitar in the original intended standard tuning of EADGBE. Because they are coated with a polymer layer, coated strings are typically heavier. The tonal frequency of a guitar string can be influenced by its mass. When string density increases, the fundamental frequency of your strings decreases. We start with D’Addario because they are probably one of the most recognized and played brands of strings out there.
