About this deal

I don’t think that I’ve ever cried to much at any book, I’m glad that I chose to read the last 20% alone because I was a mess! Although Wolfbane could be read as a stand-alone story, readers will get much more from it if they have read the previous books in the series. Michelle Paver's second series Gods and Warriors is set during the Bronze Age. It tells the story of Hylas, a 12-year-old goatherd, whose adventures take him to Ancient Crete and Ancient Egypt, and Pirra, the daughter of a high priestess with a crescent shaped scar on her cheek. The story crucially features animals in the plot – a lion, a falcon, and a dolphin; the dolphin from the first book, the lion from the second book onwards, and the falcon from the third book onwards. Wolfbane' is the ninth and final book in the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series. I can still remember reading 'Wolf Brother' for the first time so many years ago. It instantly hooked me and I've been a huge fan of Michelle Paver ever since. Either way, I’m extremely sad this series is over - the characters are so loveable and breathe so much life. Can we get another trilogy in another 10 years? I can see stories being told about Dark growing into a Clan Leader but I think the story of Torak, Renn and Wolf has resolved somewhat.

The actual ending itself was so beautifully written. As the book races to a thrilling conclusion, it's obvious that the danger is too high. People are going to get hurt. Again, no spoilers but I said to Michelle during a live stream event that she needed to campaign for her publishers to make Wolf branded tissues because they would be needed and I still stand by that. I've read the book twice now and I have to say I cried as much the second time reading it as I did the first and I am not ashamed to admit that! I have spent so much time with these characters, within this world. 18 years. It is hard not to form an attachment. This series has been so influential for me. I've met Michelle several times and every time I have gushed about how much these books have

A small, selfish part of me would have liked to see the writing style mature as its audience has, but the thought of new young readers discovering and devouring all 9 books is too enchanting. Paver places the series in north-west Europe. She says about the fruit of her research, "I've tried hard to make Torak's world accurate, and I've been delighted that the stories have met with favor in archaeological circles. A few years ago, I was asked to open a special WOLF BROTHER display case at the Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. The Museum had taken excerpts from the book, and exhibited them alongside real archaeological artifacts mentioned in the story, such as flint blades, red ochre, etc." [8] Film rights [ edit ] The Soul-Eaters are a group of mages who united to combine their powers for the good of all people calling themselves the "Healers", but became corrupted and now wish to have power over everyone, using a crystal called the Fire Opal to make demons do their bidding. There were initially seven of mages in the group. Torak's late father, Fa, joined the group against his wife's advice, before rejecting their desire to take power. He summoned the seven together and shattered the Fire Opal into three pieces, causing a great fire that ripped across the forest. The Soul Eaters were scattered and Torak's father and mother went into exile. Torak's mother then gave birth to her son, and when she died shortly afterwards Fa continued his exile with his son for 12 years, before Fa's death at the beginning of the first novel. The seven mages were from the Otter Clan (the Walker/Narrander), Seal Clan (Tenris), Wolf Clan (Torak's Father), Bat Clan (Nef), Viper Clan (Seshru), Oak Clan (Thiazzi), and Eagle Owl Clan (Eostra). As well as loving the main plot with Torak, Renn and Wolf, I got great joy from getting to see more from Dark (which I have loved in this continuation trilogy as we met him so late in Ghost Hunter). In this book Dark gets a beautiful personal plot which was wonderful to read, especially in a much loved childrens series and I’m glad that it was something Paver thought to include for him.

Hord is Renn's brother. He unknowingly helps Tenris, who's acting as a 'crippled wanderer' create a demon by capturing a young bear. Throughout the first book Hord behaves stubbornly, and fueled by guilt, believes that he must deliver Torak's blood to the World Spirit himself. In the end, he follows Torak to the Mountain of the World Spirit and tries to kill him, he fails and he and the bear are killed by an avalanche created by the World Spirit.I especially love her attention on Dark’s development in this book - Dark’s storyline felt complete by the end of this book and I was satisfied. If you haven't read the series yet, I only say please please please do not delay. If you have and are about to devour Wolfbane, I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do and enjoy the phenomenal end to this incredible series.

As much as I love all the action and conflict that goes on, I always love the afterglow epilogues she writes with all the books in her series. In the Deep Forest, Torak and Renn come across the Red Deer Clan, who have become a shell of their former self and believe the Thunderstar was a sign of the World Spirit's displeasure with them. Those Clans whose lands had been spared by the Thunderstar had abandoned their ways and, calling themselves the 'Chosen Ones', followed a new leader who defended them against a new threat which had emerged in the wake of the disaster: Skin Takers. The Skin Takers, announcing their arrival with piercing cries, steal the death marks from the dead, and eat the brains of the dead. As they hear tales of the Skin Takers, Renn shares with Torak her suspicion that Naiginn had survived their confrontation in the Far North and is responsible for the turmoil in the Deep Forest. Soon, both are separately captured by the Chosen Ones and, while Renn manages to escape with help from a sceptic hunter, Torak is brought to the Leader, who reveals himself to be Naiginn. The ice demon reveals that, in addition to surviving their battle on the Edge of the World, he had discovered his mother had lied to him about his curse: he could free his demon nature from his mortal body by consuming souls, specifically the brains of still living beings. Naiginn had created the myth of the Skin Takers, faking their cries and convincing the Chosen Ones and the subdued Deep Forest Clans that only he could defeat them. Torak manages to escape from Naiginn when Renn and Wolf send the sacred horses towards him and, much as he had during the events of Oathbreaker, he rides one away. Reaching the Sacred Grove, Torak's spirit breaks when he discovers that the oldest trees in the Forest, the Great Yew and the Great Oak, have been destroyed by the Thunderstar. initially i was surprised by the fact that, as an antagonistic force, Naiginn had less of an on-screen presence that he had in the previous books, but it's a narrative decision that ultimately works. the primary conflict in Wolfbane isn't the ice demon, but rather the protagonist's greatest fears and weaknesses; the thread of discord that threatens to divide them for good. and underneath it all -- especially Torak's own struggle between good and evil -- Fin-Kedinn's ever-present wisdom shines through, guiding them. Meticulously researched, atmospheric [...] and relentless... Introduces Paver to a new generation of readers' Guardian on Viper's DaughterThis book felt so much like home, it read like the original series. The action immediately pulled me in and was intense from the very start, but also had the additional detail that makes the world feel real that I adore, such as small observations on nature and a wider exploration on clan customs and food. It feels like my rambling is reaching its end. I have so much more I would like to say, but no more energy to sort through it. But I will say this: the attention to the customs of the old hunter-gatherers is still there, the characters and their choices can still make you cry, and they can occasionally surprise you too, Dark becoming the new Leader of the Raven Clan after Fin-Kedinn's death is the biggest one, a perfect end to such a great character. And no one who has loved the previous books will have any complaints about this one. In addition to all the things I always love about these books, a few things in particular stood out this time. For example, Renn's reply to the person who asked her about having children. She and Torak have decided not to and actually, it's no-one's business but theirs. As with all types of minority representation, we need more examples of things that are different to what is considered 'normal' and I appreciated its inclusion. I also liked the development of Dark's relationship and its resolution. Though this book is a 5/5 for me for its legacy and impact on my own creative journey, I did feel that there were some unresolved storyline’s and felt that Torak/Renn relationship didn’t get much development or resolution. For example, I didn’t feel like the whole “Torak choosing Wolf over Renn” conflict was resolved as well as it could have. I also felt that the ending was weaker compared to the ending of Ghost Hunter - Ghost Hunter felt hopeful whereas Wolfbane felt a bit more melancholy. I wished the ending was a bit more hopeful and “bright-futured” especially one of the most pivotal characters in the entire series died. Set 6,000 years ago in the wild forests of northern Scandinavia, this breathtaking adventure brings the Wolf Brother series to a magnificent and fitting end. As well as the exhilarating action, there are touching and heart-wrenching moments as the stories of some of the key players are brought to their conclusions.
