Here’s Jean’s lament from the opening pages of the novel: "Sometimes I think that if it were possible to tell a story often enough to make the hurt ease up, to make the words slide down my arms and away from me like water, I would tell that story a thousand times. It was interesting to hear more about the experience and I think the story telling was overall really good but I probably wouldn’t read it again.

And I think it has a very rich message, both for people who are not from England as well as people who have grown up here and lived here their entire lives. After 35 years they are finally reunited and all of their tragedies with Hurricane Katrina and life are gone. My problem is that Shreve's "theory" about the truth of the murders implicates a factual person in a very realistic way. I love it when my heroines stand up for themselves and don’t need any body to tell them how to do it. Yet Anita Shreve deftly intertwines their story arcs so that one begins where the other ends and the pattern keeps repeating, washing over us like the ebb and flow of the ocean over a rocky beach. In the novel, a photojournalist named Jean gets an assignment to do a photo essay on a 100-year-old double-murder that happened on the Isles of Shoals, a tiny group of islands off the coast of New Hampshire. Instead I will remark upon Shreve's incisive prose that brings us into two worlds set in the same desolate place. Shreve is again ever so adept at weaving together a story and setting up the tension between the characters. How could she later meet the woman she thought was her husband's lover and try to be pleasant and casual? She pulls letters, journals, and information about the trial which are archived in the historic city of Portsmouth. I really liked this book, I think it is great example people around the world trying to fit in on a day-to-day basis. My experience dealing with the intersections of different cultural backgrounds, and particularly the psychological effect on a child of moving around the world, is limited.
