The Wishing Spell was a legendary spell composed of a list of items which needed to be collected and put together.

Getting out mostly unharmed, but still on the run, their escape lead them to Mermaid Bay and, literally, into the ocean. The fairy godmother is dying because she finally finds a replacement; now the Fairy Godmother can rest knowing the fairy tale world rests in good hands. The Evil Queen and and the leader of the Big Bad Wolf Pack, Malumclaw, make a pact to exchange the twins for Red Riding Hood. On their way to the Fairy Kingdom the twins got lost, and found themselves in The Troll and Goblin Territory (now the Great Troblin Lake).

Alex and Conner run into a Bridge Troll, try to sneak into Cinderella's castle, are discovered, meet Cinderella, and leave without taking her glass slipper, which they came for. Before becoming an author, he had a career as a television and stage actor and is known for his Golden Globe-winning character Kurt Hummel on the show Glee.

The Wicked Witch Of The West is the main antagonist from "The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz" where Alex and Conner Bailey chase the Masked Man as well. The books are described by Colfer as a "modern-day fairy tale", following twins Alex and Conner Bailey as they fall from the real world into a world full of fairy tales they have only ever read about before and discovering there is more to this world than meets the eye. Conner, Alex, Goldilocks, Red, and Jack were exploring to find the 6 most prized items of the 6 most hated beings, the Snow Queen being one of them. Underwater, the twins meet the Seafoam Spirit who reveals the last item they need -- her dagger, which is in the Thornbush Pit. But nothing can prepare them forthe coming battle…or for the secret thatwill change the twins’ lives forever.

He tells them about the Happily Ever After Assembly and when he finds out Alex and Conner are from a different world, he also tells them about The Wishing Spell, a spell which could transport them back to their own world. They learn that Jack and Goldilocks are secretly lovers but due to Goldilocks life as a fugitive they meet in secret. They find out that the Wishing Spell can only be used twice, and the man who wrote the journal already used it. The twins' mother, Charlotte Bailey, doesn't show up on time, but another nurse at the hospital says that she had left two hours ago.Their dad died recently, and he used to tell the most amazing fairy tales about other worlds where animals could talk and you could be anyone you want. The Sea Witch is a witch who is believed to have tricked the Little Mermaid into giving up her voice. With only the help of the ragtag group of Goldilocks, Jack, Red Riding Hood, and Mother Goose and her gander, Lester, the Bailey twins discover the Masked Man's secret scheme: He possesses a powerful magic potion that turns every book it touches into a portal, and he is recruiting an army of literature's greatest villains!

Alex then gets emotional to the point the curse disintegrates and they leave just in time before the story ended.The twins manage to escape with the help of Trollbella, daughter of the Troll King, in exchange for a kiss from Conner. At a ball to celebrate the birth of Cinderella’s daughter, Alex and Conner learn that Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother is their grandmother. The Wishing Spell follows the journey of Alex and Conner Bailey after they plummet through their grandmother's storybook into another dimension where all the infamous fairy-tale characters reside. Just because you have to work a little harder at something that seems easier to others doesn't mean you're without your own talents. She is revealed to be the one who releases her stepmother from the dungeon out of genuine sympathy for her plight.
