About this deal

Eastwood came up with the name Angel Eyes on the set, for his gaunt appearance and expert marksmanship. I'll wait for the reviews, but Kino has done some fine work this year and I look forward to this release. This Ultra HD Blu-rayrelease enjoys a stunning native 4K rendition, which, even without an HDR pass, trades in a glorious restoration that finally gets the colour timing right - which is arguably worth much more. The folks at Kino Lorber announced that over thirty hours of shot-by-shot grading corrections were performed, and I think that if you have seen their previous Blu-ray release you will immediately recognize the tremendous progress that was made with them. After the bridge is demolished, Tuco steals a horse and rides to Sad Hill to claim the gold for himself.

The South Korean western movie The Good, the Bad, the Weird (2008) is inspired by the film, with much of its plot and character elements borrowed from Leone's film. Dialogue remains firmly prioritised - still somewhat quaintly overdubbed, as was the case for all of the Dollars movies (and indeed the majority of Italian productions at the time) - afforded clarity and distinction over the rest of the track, with Eastwood, Wallach and Van Cleef the three most obvious native speakers and a whole slew of bit-players somewhat hilariously dubbed along the way. In the first ten minutes he’s relating Lee Van Cleef’s Angel Eyes to Judex and suggesting that the slight stiffness in the actor’s stride might be to suggest an injury that’s exempted Angel Eyes from military service. In a lot of areas the backgrounds were so much better now that at times it felt like the entire film was redone from scratch. The Batterville Camp where Blondie and Tuco are imprisoned was based on steel engravings of Andersonville. At least one scene that was re-inserted had been cut by Leone before the film's release in Italy but had been shown once at the Italian premiere.

The emphasis on violence is seen in how the three leads (Blondie, Angel Eyes, and Tuco) are introduced to various acts of violence. The original negative of this footage was deemed too badly damaged to be used in the theatrical cut. Still with only a handful of 4K titles to its name, Kino Lorber has nonetheless impressed with its efforts thus far, testing the waters with the left-field choice of Hannibal in 4K, but really getting the attention of fans with its work on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Mad Max, which remains unreleased in other territories, and looks absolutely tremendous on the format, gifting the classic a whole new lease of life.

In 2014, The Good the Bad and the Ugly was ranked the 47th greatest film ever made on Empire 's list of "The 301 Greatest Movies Of All Time" as voted by the magazine's readers. This style can also be seen in one of the film's protagonists, Blondie (The Man with No Name), who is described by critics as more defined by his actions than his words. When I saw GBU new in 1968 my particular teenage bias held a not-flattering-to-me belief in Hollywood-centric production values.
